I know that most people bought this player because of it's SACD capability, but can others comment on it's DVD performance? Also, how well does it read really scratched DVDs? What about DVD-R, DVD+R, and CD-R reading ability?

And are there any know mechanical / functional issues with this player? Do they tend to fail completely after a couple of years?

Most Sony equipment, including ES level, is poorly put together. I've owned a reciever that had dropout issues by Sony and have read numerous things about sony cd players that go bad. Not to bash Sony I own a ton of electronics by them, but if you spending a lot on a cd player it might as well be something that lasts.

No problems after about a year and a half of playing.

I have a used one from gopher and it is still kicking ass. It is my primary source and will stay this way until I get to the next step. I got it for $85.00 used which is a steal IMO and I am very happy with it. Build quality is pretty good. Some transport jitter but nothing that quality damping and isolation wont eliminate.

Mine was a store display unit I bought for half price about 2 years ago.
No problems so far with DVDs. Original (printed) CDs OK, too.
Problem with burnt CDs with scratches/dirt on. Sometimes seeks for tens of seconds before jumping to track, or before I eject the CD.

As a DVD player - adequate.
As a transport - problems.
As a redbook analog player - poor sound, ok for entry level.
As a SACD player - OK for entry level, nothing like units with good analog stages.

Some of the ES stuff is really well built. A few of their receivers and SACD players are built like tanks. The SCD-C555ES, SCD-1, SCD-XA777ES, TA-N9000ES, TA-E9000ES, DTC-ZA5ES, MDS-JA333ES, ST-SA50ES, and TC-KA3ES are some of the products that come to mind. On the other hand there are a few awful ES products, those 400 CD changes are downright horrible.
