I am planning to purchase a wallwart AC adapter from a distributor in Europe, preferably with a regulated 24 V DC output, 230 V AC input. Elpac is available only via Digikey, and most models don't take 230 V, including WM080, for which I have seen many recommendations here. Besides, they are quite expensive, and Digikey has a minimum order of $100 IIRC.
So, how much ripple is acceptable? I can get Mascot AC adapters (see http://www.mascot.no ) from RS-Components. For example, their 9923 model has <30 mV ripple, but I can only get the 12 V version from RS. The 2121 has 170 mV ripple, the 2124 has 100 mV, both are available in 24 V versions. More expensive models might be better, but I don't want to spend more than 50 Euros, so I didn't look at most other datasheets

The Elpac WM080 has +-0,5% ripple, so at 24 V, this means 120 mV in each direction, right? I am not sure if the absolute figure in the datasheet should be 120 mV or 240 mV in that case (Elpac doesn't give one).

It's not a wallwart, but have you noticed article number 510476 - 13 from Conrad (www.conrad.de)? It has got plenty of power and the manual claims a ripple of 5 mV(rms)...

No, I was not aware of that. For what I have in mind (lugging it around in a backpack) it is too heavy and too bulky, but I will certainly use it for another project, it has excellent specs. Thank you for the recommendation

Would the ripple of the Elpac WM080 pose any problems if used with a normal PPA? Would it be much worse than if using batteries?

you can always run the wallwart into an on-board regulator. You just have to make sure you start out with enough DC and that the supply can provide the extra current.
