My wife makes me keep my collection hidden in a closet. I am approaching 2000 CDs. I have about 300 LPs after getting rid of 200 a couple of years ago. Which I now regret.
All of CDs are ripped, non of my LPs. I initially started ripping to MP3, got an iPod and switched to AAC. Now I'm slowly reripping to ALAC for archive and home listening. I still use AAC on my iPod which I never use for critical listening.
In iTunes
AAC and MP3 - 1878 albums, 25,270 songs, 118.1 days, 115.71 GB
ALAC - 573 albums, 6619 songs, 23.8 days, 164.14 GB
And I don't have enough music
Edit: I listen with shuffle by album and I'm constantly rediscovering music I haven't heard for a while. It's great.
For the ultimate collection there's this The World's Greatest Music Collection - eBay (item 320230084120 end time Mar-29-08 18:00:00 PDT)
