Ouch...

In reality, the D555 isn't even all that great sounding (in stock guise at the very least)

No thanks!!

I agree, guess the seller is hoping for some uneducated buyer to get deluded in the qoute "rarity" hype. A few weeks ago there was a D-555 that had sold for $495 on Audiogon, there's a sucker born every minute.

Not even remotely close to that much even if it was in mint condition fully functioning with orignal box and all accessories.

Didn't this guy have this exact portable for sale a couple of weeks ago on ebay? It was going for FAR less than what he's got listed now. Could be a different guy, but I'd swear on the line "give this girl a 9."

Funny thing is, he had the same player listed a week ago at 499.95. Hadn't gotten any bids after a couple of days, so ended the auction early and relisted it with an opening bid of $525. I thought most people LOWER the opening bid on something that hasn't sold...?

I highly doubt that ANY PCDP is worth that much. I think vintage is awesome, but not THAT awesome. If I was a millionaire hell bent on completing my collection, maybe.

It depends on what part of the D-555 you attach value to. For the aspect of Discman as industrial sculpture, the 'vintage cool looking brick', I suppose it's about what you're prepared to pay.

For sound alone, I'd say $30 max. Compared to current-day Discmen, it's an underachiever... and although sticking in a few caps here and there may round out the sound, it will not address the underlying issues of why the sound is inferior. I never listen to it these days but I will take it out to look at it once in a while.

My "value according to sound first, looks second" list...

D-303 (great line-out, nice looks, my favorite)
D-311 (good all rounder, slim design)
D-211 (agressive head-out, decent looks)
D-515 (great looks, good all around sound)
D-E900 (great looks, good sound)
D-626 (incredible construction, so-so sound)
D-25S (great looks, "eh" sound when stock)
D-Z555 (nice industrial look, old school digital sound)
D-777 (nice looks & portability, decent sound)

The most I'd pay at the top is $100, and about $50 at the bottom...the players shouldn't be worth as much as they generally sell for. $500+ for a Z555 is beyond ridiculous.

In addition to this D-555, the seller in the past has sold numerous vintage Sony Walkmans including a Sony WM-D6C for $549.

The seller is trying to ask for the suggested retail 1991 price of the D-555, I don't think I even paid anywhere near that amount when I purchased my D-555 new back in 91 and I seriously doubt anyone will bite this auction. Maybe the next time he re-lists the D-555 he should ask for $575 as the minimum bid with a $600 BIN price.

that guy is funny.

yes, it's strange these days that those d6-d3's are going for such prices. btw, i've just bought a "broken" d311 for 10,50. well, if it's repairable it's nice. otherwise, a nice one for the collection.
