Euphoric, involving, heavy, rich, punchy, whereas the audiophile of today wants resolving, detailed, spacious, extended. The older chips seem to emulate a richer music while the new chips, especially the Sabre, are very bright and analytical. It's just not for me.
My only experience of NOS is the Hifiman HM-601.
With that said, I just dusted off my Sabre DAC a few days ago, and I definitely prefer the Sabre sound. So I think I'm in the "resolving, spacious, extended, analytical" camp... unless I just haven't heard a 'real' NOS DAC yet.
Which sub-$500 would you recommend?
