How many people here will not get Windows Vista?

He's a high school senior and took AP Computer Science last year, I believe, so that could be what happened.

So your parents named you both Andrew?

I'm downloading Vista Business as I type. I get it free from OSU (I don't think they realize I graduated yet). I've been using Linux lately, but once I'll give Vista a shot when I get some free time. I'm not convinced that Vista is a great leap forward from XP, though, which is why I'm in no hurry to upgrade.

I may upgrade but I'm going to wait for a while. I want to see what happens when it comes out.

Also usually when a OS comes out it takes a LONG time for people to frind tweaks, work-arounds and everything else to modify the OS, to get it running faster and to really understand how to optomize it and all the features it comes where.

I'd rather let others deal with that before I hop on board.

It took more than a year for the folks at LitePC to cut down the size of XP. Unless they can do the same to Vista, I won't jump on the wagon.

I'm using Ubuntu Linux and I'm sticking with it. Vista doesn't offer anything extra that I need, but it does restrict my freedom to do as I please with my PC. I'm not a gamer, but I can find enough Linux games to entertain my kids.

definitely not me.

XP is fine the way it is.

I have 2GB of ram, and XP is fast and responsive. Why would I bog down my computer with vista if the only thing I enjoyed using while RC2 was installed is the flip-3d thing?

It's not like I'm even going to think about abandoning photoshop for vista's marginally better imaging software.

I finally bought a new desktop PC - HP Pavillion Media Center TV PC M7664X. Shipping and handling are free and I should get it next Friday, February 2nd, 2007. I plan on registering the computer's MAC to my D-Link router and then I will low-level format and re-partition the 300GB HDD into three 100GB slices so I can install Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, Red Hat Fedora 6 SE Linux, and FreeBSD 6.2. I am entitled to a $100 USD Circuit City mail in rebate and I decided to upgrade from Windows Media Center 2005 to Windows Vista Home Premium for $10 USD shipping.

SO, I guess this thread was all for naught for me. Oh well...continue discussing!

I will certainly not be purchasing Vista. I used RC1 and hated it. The interface sucks, the thing is intrusive as hell, it hides everything from you, and bites off resources like you're encoding a DVD in the background. I hated everything about Vista, and the more I learn, the more I hate it.

Their security measures have the potential to be a great medium for a DDOS attack, their license is a nightmare (did you know you can't install it more than twice, even if your computer has gone to hell from a virus or a broken "critical update"), the program eats resources, the thing is DRM hell, it may prevent you from using your own hardware... jesus, there are so many reasons not to buy Vista that it's not funny anymore.

So instead, I suggest alternatives:

First, a beloved easy-to-use Linux distro called Ubuntu. I personally prefer the KDE desktop, so I use the Kubuntu package (which is just Ubuntu with KDE pre-installed). It is fast, secure, and very user-friendly.

And second, for those of you who can't do without Windows programs, we have an up-and-coming rebuild of Windows called ReactOS. It will be completely compatible with Windows binaries. It is currently in alpha stage and not suitable for everyday use, but by the time Vista takes over, it should be in beta stages or eventually maybe even full release.

Don't know about the rest but all copies of Vista can be installed as many times as you want, which is one thing they've improved over XP. XP had restrictions on number of times you could reinstall and reactivate. I believe it was 11 times for retail and 3 times for OEM (thought I seem to have done it way more times with my Dell OEM discs), vista doesn't.

EDIT: Christ, I'd forgotten how badly Inquirer articles are written
