How many of you underclock during the summer?
Jun 30, 2008 at 5:23 PM Post #16 of 45
I hadn't really thought about it, but summer my house is probably cooler than it is in the winter. We have (mostly) free heat in the winter time, and the room I'm in is not well designed, so no matter where my box sits it's close enough to a heater to raise it's temp

my pc is fairly quite at idle 52dB@1cm (measured) or 21dB@1m

The fans on my Powerbook go crazy in the summer and there is nothing I can really do about it. Even set on lowest processor speed, I still hear the annoying fan whirring away.

I just got an old fanless iMac Snow G3 off eBay, which should be absolutely silent and I can't wait!

Maximum allowable temperature according to Intel can be found on their site by searching for your revision or stepping of your CPU.

The temp probes used a quite inaccurate, but in the most cases they are biased so that they always show a couple of degrees C more than the CPU really is. The thermal junktion(TJ) can also make the temperature program do odd things if it does not recognize the correct TJ-max. The max temp on a Q6600 is depending on stepping 62-71 C according to Intels data sheet. The G0 can handle up to 71C stable and the B3(oldest revision) can handle 62.2 C.

The newer Intel models have some really strange temp probes the E8400 should be especially bad for some odd reason.

the 62.2 and 71 are not Tj, but rather are Tc; for SLACR, mid 70 Tj is still considered reasonable.

My E8400 OC'd to 3.6GHz never needs to be underclocked.

And it's has an indirectly cooled Scythe Mini Ninja cooler with no fan on it. Only two very quiet 120mm Fans both sucking for positive air pressure.

Oh, did I mention my GeForce 8600GT is passively cooled too.

Nope my MBP is just as hot summer, winter, or spring.

It gets hot period. But it's manageable I have an original MBP. I don't have the newer processor, which supposedly runs very cool. At least cooler than mine.

I keep mine the same as I do in the winter. I've noticed maybe a 2-3*C increase at idle, which was alleviated when I propped open two of my 5.25" bay doors to allow better air circulation (yeah, I know I need a better case).

Same here; my E6600 is running at 3.0ghz up from 2.4 with vcore at only 1.17v. Cores running at 36c right now which is good enough for me.

Very nice, wish I could justify a 45nm chip but my E6600 is running fine for now so I might wait 'til Q4 then upgrade to Nehalem and X58.

You must have a newer chip. My early adopting E6600 needs a good amount of juice to hit 3.2 and a stupidly higher amount to go to 3.4.

Me too as well. It's such a great cooler... although the thing is massive.

Underclock? What's that?

I got my E2160 1,8Ghz now at 3,3Ghz stable with idle 28 degrees celsius

No mine is constantly running on OC settings.

24/7 Specs:
QX9770 -- 4005mHz @ 1.368V on Thermalright 120 Ultra eXtreme
ASUS Rampage Formula mobo

I fried my HD4870 sample while benching about 4 weeks ago and my Samsung 275T+ driver died at about the same time also, replacement on shipment. Right now my workhorse rig, I'm gfx-cardless and monitor-less

Waiting on HD4870x2 in August or maybe if I get early sample
