While doing research on a new CDP, I keep coming across people saying, " ...and as a bonus, it has HDCD?". How many redbook cds are HDCD anyway? I only own one that I know of. Are some simply not labled?

Redbook CD is the term for a typical, standard-complient audio CD. HDCD is a way of sneaking more information onto the CD, but it needs a special decoder chip to process that extra information. An HDCD can be played by any CD player, since the extra HDCD info doesn't interfere with the normal CD stuff.

There are about 5000 HDCD releases right now. Many don't have any sort of indication on them, and it's quite possible you already have a few without realizing it. Check out the running HDCD list over in the Music forum for an idea of what's out there.
