how is redbook on a stock Sony 555es?

i have been thinking about getting a 555es and having it modded, but i will have to live with the stock sound for a while until i get the funds for the modifications together. how is the redbook of the stock unit?

Oh yeah. I gave mine up a couple of months ago. The sound is well Sony - sparkly or bright depending on how you look at it. For me it would fall under the articulate category - not much warmth. However it is very dynamic and extended with good detail and pace.

For the $ one can pick it up for, it is worth it IMO.

For redbook, it was better than my 3910. It can be harsh so if mods correct that, you would have yourself a fine source.
