the headphone jack at max volume?

I see many posts lamenting the fact that certain portables don't have a line out jack. Is the S/N ratio better on a lineout?

), but it's more a factor of the impedence difference and the fact that a headphone out is amplified.

A real line-out should bypass all EQ and headphone-out stages. I think sony's line-outs are fixed at 2.5 mw or 1/2 their max output.

You need an amp to enjoy the line-out of course, but you get more detailed sound, less distortion and more power to drive better headphones. And probably longer batterylife.

the line out bypasses all of the cdp's equalizations, and, most importantly, own headphone amps, giving you a clearer, undistorted sound.
