How Does The Noise Cancelling of Senhnheiser CX 400-II Work?

As far as i've seen online, Sennheiser CX 400-II are indeed noise cancelling. And from what I know noise cancelling requires a battery for the dedicated mic.
Are the earphones noise cancelling? and if so - do they require a battery?
