What are the major sound differences? If you had experience with the HE-300 and HD 598/558 what are some of the differences?
I know 1 for sure is that the cable on the HE-300 is widely hated.

Considering the HE-300 even though I have the HD558s. The HD558 are still within the 30 day return period and the HE-300 are only $20 more.

Looks like someone watched Zeos's video
The HE-300s has many revisions , in my experience the revisions also altered the sound in certain areas
The REV-3 has a good top end extension , goes up and resolves quite well

Thanks for the response. I returned the 558 and kept the HE300 a couple weeks ago.
I really liked how comfortable the 558s were and how light they were. I also preferred the oval earcups on the 558s over the round on HE300s.
The cable on the 558s is also "better" in my opinion, primarily because there is rubber sheathing and there are no microphonics like there are with the HE300's silver made cable.
Despite all those things in favor of the 558s, I still went with the HE300. Here is why: I felt the build quality on the HE300 was just far superior, they were sturdy, almost tank-like yet only slightly heavier than the 558s.
The bass on the HE300s is also punchier and tighter. After listening to the HE300s every day for a week I found the sound on the 558s unpleasant. The highs and mids seemed too harsh and things just felt like they were "screeching" at me. The HE300s definitely felt warmer and maybe more spacious.

Now I need to work on improving my source without breaking the bank. Currently the HE300s are powered by the Asus Xonar DG which is advertises "built-in headphone amp supports all gaming headsets up to 150 ohms of impedance".
