I have an old Samsung Galaxy S i9000 which I'm considering using as a streamer to my Hi-Fi. I understand that the Wolfson WM8994 DAC it contains is quite god for a mobile device, especially if a custom ROM is installed, but how does it stack up against an external DAC in the £50-£150 bracket or the DAC inside a £350 mini Hi-Fi?
 
Also, is it possible to connect an external DAC to this phone? I know it is on the SGS3.

Thanks for your reply. I thought i read something about USB Out working with Jellybean, but maybe thats just new Jellybean phones?
 
Putting that aside then, I'm trying to decide if usinng the phone is a viable way to play lossless digital music through my Hifi or whether a laptop and a £100 DAC would be a big improvement?

Not all jellybean rom/phones have usb audio out , there is a list on the android USB dac thread
