I have listened to after market units and they are as you describe, un-dynamic, thin, scratchy, worse than FM, but the Benz doesn't suffer from all these things, I must be spoiled, I assumed they all couldn't be that bad. Oh well, when I assume I make an,,,...

So you're telling me that the benz stock system is better than my $5000 after market system? The stock systems in both the audi and the benz are terrible, by the way. And I'm talking about even the S600, which we test drove before buying the A8L.

Why does everyone keep saying Satellite Radio had bad sound quality? Take a Benz with Harman Surround and satellite for a spin sometime, then tell me you cant get good SQ from satellite. Its the equipment not satellite. Perfect signal all the time, only exceptions are parking garage's and bridges.

It has to do with the low bitrate used by Sirius. I hear too many compression artifacts and it becomes fatigueing to listen to in short order. My car system is cheap but it isn't particularly forgiving of less than stellar sources. And i honestly am not impressed by the music variety either. Besides, streaming Shoutcast stations is free and I get to listen to music I really want to hear

Yes,,,,and who is WE?

Slapping a bunch of expensive parts together doesn't always make for a good system. Also, loud doesn't equal SQ.

I hate to wake up this thread, but I am looking to get an FM modulator for my dad for Christmas so he can listen to his new mp3 player in his car (no AUX in and doesn't want to replace the head unit). I saw someone mention this Scosche FM modulator in this thread. Is this the best FM modulator to get, or are there any better ones? Are there any that can auto-sense a signal (have a relay in them) so you don't need to use a switch?

No car = no place to put the mp3 player...

I am not sure who makes the best FM modulator, but my setup has changed since I posted in this thread before. My car has an iPod interface, so I just plug in my ipod and control it with the car's head unit controls. I kind of miss the voice indexing of my Kenwood Keg/Phatbox, but this works good enough for my needs.

I use the separate aux input for portable XM satellite radio (Inno). As was mentioned, satellite does not give the best sound quality, but my car is not set up with acoustics in mind, anyway (soft top convertible). Satellite does offer tons of choices in music and talk/news that are not available in my area, so I like to have it.

10 Year old Sony cassette adapter for CD player hooked into a ipod shuffle.

Works well in one car, the other car has a noisy cassette player so you can hear the plastic band in the tape moving around which is sort of annoying.
