This might seem like an ambiguous question but try to understand me here.

For me I appreciate the sound quality for the first minute or two with "critical listening" paying attention to the detail, soundstage, etc. then I get accustomed to it and listen to it for the melody/lyrics, basically the music content. If I am doing another task such as writing/reading I probably cannot differentiate between my $10 headphone setup to my $500 setup.

What are your thoughts/experiences?

wow you must be pretty easily distracted LOL. nah I find that I can still totally appreciate the quality even while I am multitasking a couple of other things. the SQ with my current rig is pretty hard to ignore

Sometimes I can block everything out and don't even realize I'm still listening to music, I was making a LOD for my iPod the other day and I was so into getting my techflex and heatshrink tubing on that I forgot I had headphones on and almost ripped my iPod off my desk whenI got up for a drink lol.
