I read through the whole cable DIY faq/guide a few times, but stil i wanted to know, how do you know which wire corresponds to what on the other side? Do you have to use a multimeter of some sort?

Normally, I think, the sleeving is colored. But you could also use an ohmmeter (or multimeter). Put one lead on the wire you want to find, touch all of the other wires until your resistance isn't infinite.

These days you can get a basic multimeter for not much more than that. Nowhere near what's recommended by many of the DIY experts, but useful, nonetheless. Check your local Harbor Freight.
