How do you guys rip your CD's?

Until recently, under Linux I used Asunder which is much faster than Rubyripper.

My current favorite, however, is a Windows/Linux mix:

Codeweaver's Crossover Linux Professional (commercial version of WINE) running dbPowerAmp Reference 14.1 set for secure / accurate ripping to uncompressed FLAC files: all the benefits of WAV with full tagging capabilities.
When ripping HDCD encoded CD's, mostly Reference Recordings classical and some movie soundtrack albums, I set the DSP mode to HDCD which provides 20 bit HDCD rips.

Windows Media Player 12's "Rip CD" option into WMA Lossless VBR100 - creates some big fat files (>1.0Mbps) but gets it done. I use the external HD-DVD drive from an Xbox 360 because it was $20 on closeout and I needed something that read CDs and DVDs. It also seems to do fairly well with damaged discs (it seems to have a higher success rate reading damaged discs - I don't know if this is actually true or not, it's just my experience).

On the last page, there is talk of SACD and 24/96 - these are unrelated. SACD is DSD, not PCM, and samples 1-bit at 2.82Mhz; DVD-Audio is PCM and can sample at 24/96 and can be read by any standard DVD drive (however that doesn't mean any computer can play it back!). I know Creative used to have a software package that would enable DVD-Audio ripping and playback on PCs using their Media Source software; no idea what the state of that is today. I know of no drives or hardware to put SACDs into a desktop computer (short of getting an SACD player, and feeding the analog outputs to an ADC connected to a computer; would be bloody time consuming).

For those interested in ripping their hirez DVD-A discs, I found "DVD Audio Extractor" to work quite well. It will rip and convert to several different formats including WAV, FLAC, OGG, MP3 and AIFF.

A fully functional 30 day free trial for Linux or Windows can be obtained from:

I've never tried it, but i'm pretty sure the free program DVDShrink would be able to rip DVD-As, too.
Just adding to your options.
