I do about the same. I listen to Spotify and check out their recommendations from time to time as well as check out what my friends are listening to. I'm also connected to Last.fm and they've given me some pretty good recommendations.  Recently, I've been finding some movies to have some really great stuff so I check out a lot of artist that way.

I also tried the following (not cheap!) strategy:

Occasionally I like to look outside what i know i like and about 3 years ago i saw a thing on the bbc news site about classic album sundays. This got me thinking that there are loads of classic albums i haven't heard. So i looked for one of those "500 top albums" lists (i think it was rolling stone's), and went through it and bought anything that i thought i wouldn't hate. Most records on the list are pretty old so the cds were not expensive (i think they averaged about ukp3-4), and if memory serves i bought about 60-70 cds out of the list. As a result i got a lot of stuff that was ok, some that i really didn't like at all, and about 10% were epiphanies - solid gold in my opinion.

This led to me exploring the bands i found i liked on the list, and achieved my objective of finding new "starting points" for further exploration. It was a risk in that i paid money for material i didn't necessarily know i would like, but the discoveries i made as a result were worth it to me.

This is one of those odd days when I do.

Anyway, I too am on /r/listentothis, /r/music and /r/electronicmusic. I think all three are exceptionally awesome for finding new stuff, people from all walks of life use Reddit which I think is very handy because it helps to bring new and interesting unheard of content from around the world.

Another subreddit which is awesome for finding recommendations is /r/ifyoulikeblank -- pretty much if you post "If I like (IFL) 'insert music or show/movie here' What else would I like?(WEWIL)" and people reply with similar or relevant content that may be appealing to you.

Another great website is www.tastekid.com It's awesome for finding similar music. I think it's done pretty well. Definitely check it out people!

I do much listening on the 3 Linn stations (Linn radio, jazz and classical). Linn also offers high quality downloads in FLAC, ALAC at 24 and 16 bit, and 320 MP3 s. Some of the downloads aren't available in the US due to copyright restrictions.

I tend to have a particular genre in mind that I want to explore, and then google the big names in said genre before listening to samples on iTunes and spotify. Has not let me down yet.
