Right now my relatively untrained ears are content with my Logitech Z Cinema speakers. Here are the technical specifications:
After reading this review by The Wirecutter, I am considering getting the M-Audio Studiophile AV40's. Here are the spcecs:
Now... I don't know what any of this means, but it seems the numbers are considerably lower in the M-Audio speakers. I have the hunch this is just a difference in terms being used, the Logitech set perhaps making their specifications sound better with a touch of marketing influence.
If somebody could translate by explaining why the M-Audio speakers are considered much better but appear to have lower specs, I'd appreciate the learning experience!
- Total power: 180 watts RMS

- Low-Frequency Driver: 4" diameter, polypropylene-coated, magnetically shielded with high-temperature voice coil
- High-Frequency Driver: 1" diameter, magnetically shielded silk cone tweeter
- Frequency Response: 85 Hz – 20 kHz
- Crossover Frequency: 2.7 kHz
- RMS SPL: 101.5 dB @ 1 meter
- Signal-To-Noise Ratio: > 90 dB (typical, A-weighted)
- Input Connectors: Left and right RCA line input, left and right 1/4" TRS input, and 1/8" aux input
