One side of my NE-6s just went out. 
 
Why does this keep happening to me? On higher end IEMs, is this problem eliminated, or a cheap fix?

It's usually the cable that's the issue, higher end IEMs tend to have replaceable ones. My UE cable costs $27 shipped, and generally lasts about 5 months.
