I'm trying to link my friend to a specific post in a thread that's pretty long. How do I link him directly to it, rather than having him go through 4-5 pages of posts?

I think you can just go to the thread you want, then copy and paste the address that is in the address bar in your browser. That will take your friend right to the thread that you want him to go to.

edit: ahhh, I see your question now. Sorry my answer was of no help at all.

Yeah.. I wish there was an easy way to tell post numbers.. but what I generally do is find the post date... then go do a search for all of the user's posts, and look for the date and the specific post from there.

First, find the thread you want.

Example, I want to link to KR's post in the Darkest Desires thread on page 36 in which he mentions Motherwar (towards the end of the page).

This is the Darkest Desires Part 2 thread:

http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...threadid=21050

Second, find the post you want.

Third, view source.

Fourth, in the viewed source, find a keyword or something of the specific post to which you want to link.

Fifth, scroll back just a little ways, and find the "<a name=" HTML tag. That's your postid.

In the above example, it's "post366371".

Now, combine the two, separated by a pound-sign:

http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...=36#post366371

All links to specific posts within Head-Fi will take this form. The first part, before the pound, will be an exact copy of the URL displayed in your browser when you are on the right page. The postid tells your browser to go to the right part of the page.

Viewing source? God that's complicated... plus.. uh.. for some reason (checking right now) my view source doesn't work.

I figured out to just Search and find the user's post (because it's usually my post that I'm trying to link my friend to)

to get the postid, you just have to hover your mouse over the "quote" button of that post

(remove the space in the http)

You know? That's what my post originally said. But then when I tried it with the example, it didn't work. So that's why I changed it to the page thing + "#" + postid.

That said, yes, if you can search for the specific post, then yes, that is more straightforward. However, if I'm right where I want to be already, then I think my way is easier.

But then again, I'm a geek.
