Stupid question...
If I have a portable CD player with optical line out, and I run it into a DAC without any preamp/gain ability or into a headphone amp, how do I control volume? Or is there basically no way of doing this?
2nd part of the question, is it better to control the volume at the gain level or at the headphone/speaker amp level for quality? I'm assuming it's better to keep the signal at full strength and let the amp take care of things correct?
