I bought a Rio Karma and i'm currently transferring about 5.7GB of mp3's to the unit via usb, man, it's slow as hell. I would say it's about 20% into the upload and it's been a good 20 minutes since i started uploading files. How can i go about checking whether or not my usb ports are set to 1.1, usb 2.0 or usb 2.0 full speed (iirc, usb full speed is the 480mbps spec).

My mobo is a Abit IC7-G (iirc).

Thanks for any help. Oh, i'm on xp, sp1.

From the Abit site...

USB 2.0 Supports 480MB/s data transfer rate
Supports speeds up to 480 Mb/sec, approximately forty times faster than conventional USB 1.1

Check Usb 2.0 is enabled in the bios...

I have never encountered USB 2.0 settings in BIOS.

If you have windows xp, you need service pack1 (at least) to be able to use USB 2.0. If you have winxp and service pack1-2 then install the latest drivers for your motherboard, which will include the USB 2 drivers as well.

Edit: Abit usually has a separate USB2.0 driver for it's motherboards.

Just going by the fact that my Abit board has a bios option for Usb 1/2 support

Some slightly older mobos have x USB 2.0 ports and y USB 1.1 ports. Make sure the ones you're using are indeed USB 2.0. The mobo manual should specify which ones.

I think if you will check Control Panel-->System-->Hardware-->Device Manager-->Universal Bus Controllers, you should see the designation "Enhanced" if you have USB 2.0. That's in WinXP.

Here's an interesting result of someone tested various flash memory drive/player with USB2.0 for writing speed using 16MB file.
(Linked article is in Japanese so I'll attach the image for chart.)

Even with the fastest flash memory via USB2.0, actual writing speed was only 16.5MB/s (=132Mbps). Flash player like Rio SU70 worked at 2.5MB/s (=19.8Mbps).
So I think "20% of 5.7GB in 20 minutes (=7.6Mbps)" is not that bad for HDD player, which needs to first tranfer to buffer memory and then write to HDD.

Edit: To answer the thread title, I'll add a link to a free software that can test HDD and USB flash drive read/write speed (no installation needed).
Or you can find youeself similar freeware somewhere.

Edit2: OK, so it was just the driver problem, and I was wrong, again. Ignore me, thanks.
