You mean by modifying them, or equalizing them? If you EQ them, turn down the mids and treble on the EQ rather than boosting the bass.

Is this actually good advice? Wouldn't turning down the mids and treble make everything sound flat and muted?

The important thing is to avoid clipping and introducing other artifacts into the mix.
So if you boost bass, make certain you do not do it excessively.  Don't goose the fart so much that it clips on dynamic music passages.  Classical music is brutal in this regard... so watch out for that.  Use your ears to guide you.  I usually do a combo of both bass boosting and higher freq cutting.  When I get an EQ curve I like, I level set it so it matches the un-EQ'd output level.  So activating the EQ in and out should not introduce a large boost in overall output amplitude.
