Title. If I bought them right now they would plug directly into my motherboard which uses some Realtek audio hardware. How much of an improvement would I see with an amp? Right now I have an E7, I'll probably end up getting the E9 down the road if it makes that much of an improvement.

Out of an iPod or intel HD they sound very good.  Say about 90% of their potential.  The other 10% comes in the bass with a proper amp and dac.  The bass tightens up and gets more impact.

Realtek is real bad though, but I'm assuming E7 is all you'd need for the D2000.  An E9 might give the bass more impact still, but not much else.

They scale nicely when amped tho.

The Denons don't need much power to sound good. They'll benefit from a crystal clear DAC, sure (anything's better than a phone headphone output), but you don't exactly need to put a powerhouse of an amplifier behind them. They work very efficiently. Although, naturally, you amp them well and they'll gain some bass and depth as well.
