Just wanted to know how what is the most common cause of HDD dap deaths. It would be interesting to see how fragile HDDs actually are, or if another component gives way first.

And post below how long your HDD DAPs have lasted.

Me? I haven't had a HDD DAP yet! All flash/PCDP/Walkmen. But I'd be interested to know how fragile HDD daps really are... (eyeing refurb H120)

I had a 4G iPod 40GB. The HDD died about 2-3 months after the one year warranty

Great Post.

It seems we tend to remember when our dap died, but forget about that draw filled with cell phones. I have gone through 4 blackberries since I bought two 2nd gen iPods (about for 4 years ago). I have replaced one battery in one of these iPods. My 4th gen remains bulletproof.

I don't know if it is a question of higher iPods sales or lower quality, but the 5th gen seems to have more problems. It started with scratches and poor screen quality. Now, I hear more stories of 5th gen's not working a short period after the one year warranty has passed.

I know we all like those thin dap's. I just wonder can you go too far. The new dap's may be too thin that result in shorten life and make repairs very difficult.

EDIT: I wonder if hard drives are having more problems, the result of the demands made by movies ????

A little over 2 1/2 years on my Creative Zen Xtra and no problems aside from a sometimes sticky Menu button.

My 3rd gen iPod (20GB) ran several years before the battery lost it's ability to hold a charge fro more than a couple hours of playback.

Got a 3rd party replacement battery kit and replaced it myself.

Still going strong a year or so later.

2nd Gen 20gig Ipod. Dropped, fell down stairs. Basically abused and still kept working until I spilled a Coke on it! RIP 2002-2006

3g 40gb ipod. this thing is built like a tank. probably the most durable generation because apple started to cut prices and therefore material quality. i dropped mine at least 5 times. never skipped. i even opened it up a couple of times. the battery lasts about 4-5 hours but that's all i really need in a day. a little bit more than two years now.

My first Zen Micro (1/2004) died when I dropped it from waist-level onto concrete, which is understandable.

Luckily, it was still under warranty, so a trade for a replacement was in order. Then, about a year later, it suddenly started complaining of a firmware error, which would send it to the recovery screen. Nothing would work (reformat, reload firmware, cleanup, etc.) and Creative refused to even give me e-mail support because it was out of warranty. It was obvious that it was a software problem that could easily be fixed if they would let me send it in, but they wouldn't listen to anything I said. So now it just sits in its box, and I've got an iPod Shuffle. Very happy with it.

I had mine in my jeans pocket, I was going to hang it off a ledge where on the other side are my stairs... So I put the pocket side end towards the stairs, and I see a black object fall out... My lovely X5, for the first time, fell, and grinded the wall a bit, and hit the stairs at the half way point. One small dent, lots of paint from my wall, broken screen and can't play music.

I'm sad now.

it was perfectly fine when i was using it. my cousin kept on borrowing it, and he dropped it a few times. when he returned it, it was making this grinding noise, opened it and found out that it was my hard drive making the noise. it was running fine for 2 years.
