No they are really gone The A1266 hit the bull's eye for me. I still keep trying to find a companion for it. But no luck so far. Maybe a Stax, never heard them before.
I will give credit to this site for teaching me how to listen. The depth of that effort dictated my endgame. It also introduced me to a lot of music. That was worth the discovery. I feel I got out of this pretty well compared to other's journeys. I came here looking for some good portables. I came out with a lot of tubes in shoe boxes, a few sets of headphones gone, a tube amp that's a buyer beware boat anchor, a DAC and some fun times.
Through my journey I learn that "endgame" is not always find the best performer out there, but to find something that we love. That include the pros, cons, and quirks of a product. All good and bad things there create a certain character that make me smile when listen to it.
Even when something greater, newer, and more capable product arrive, that doesn't change at all about the special character of product that I love (not just like it, but truly comforting me).
Of course, just because we already found The One, we still could continues the journey to find The Two perhaps?
.....and then concubines, family members, loyal posse...... It's a slippery slope. Then there's mods, cables, tubes, power conditioners, magic stones, and in memory of the Nord Patrick who swore by magic paper and power cords.
There is always something "new" to approach and try out.
However I do think that there is an endgame.
For me it was when I reached the main components of the stuff in my signature.
Since then I don't feel like I have to "upgrade" anything anymore.
If I were to keep this stuff forever I'd still be happy.
However the hobby doesn't end there.
There are other signatures, tweaks and sidegrades to Explore.
This hobby is more than listening to music, at least for many of us.
Reading up on gear, talking about it, comparing it to other stuff all remains part of it.
Even after you reached "endgame"
The biggest difference is, that when trying new stuff now, the conclusion usually is "it's different but not better"
I can agree with that. If new releases don't develop the urge to pursue them and one's happy with stuff s/he already has, that would be the endgame indeed.
