I don't see why that's mutually exclusive. The "motorized" portion just needs to be attached to the device offered by headroom in
this thread.

It's possible of course. But probably pretty difficult to do, since a stepped attenuator needs to 'stop' at a discrete angle. A motor turning a pot can stop anywhere.

I think I understand the concept of how they did it. Some sort of relay network, probably implemented in an IC.
