So I'm having trouble with figuring out deep to insert the S4s. The large tips provide a good deal but rest at the outer edge of my ear canal I guess, and the bass response is minimal. The medium tips go much farther in, and give richer sound.

But what is normal insertion for IEMs? should the gels in this case go into the ear canal, or should they sit outside of them?

Depends on the IEM. My um3x goes pretty deep while my IE8s use a shallow insertion. Gels normally go into the canal, and should with the S4. Just do whatever you think sounds the best and gives the most isolation

For the S4's, I set the gels barely against my ear canal, just enough to plug them.....then gently twist back and forth until inserted. I don't put mine in very far.....just enough for them to stay firmly in place.

Try the dual flanged tips, they insert deeper into the canal. When inserting mine they sit pretty deep in my canal. Do whatever feels comfortable and creates the best sq.
