Hello. I've been encoding vbr aac files for a little while now but iTunes does not give me a vbr bitrate when I click info. For Instance: If I encode 128kpbs aac vbr the bitrate should vary no? Well, when I check the bitrate it still says 128kbps!? No fluctuation, nothing. I'm using a Mac BTW. Thanks.

The bitrate varies throughout the encoded file. You can calculate the average bitrate by doing some math with the size of the encoded file and the playtime.

Size of File in kb / length of file in seconds

So if you have a file that is 5MB and 4 minutes long:

(5 * 1024 * 8) / (4 * 60) = 170kbs average

You can also play them with WinAmp, which (at least in the "classic" skin of the version I have) has a real-time kbps window. You can see the bitrate changing from moment to moment as the music is being played.
