And according to an Onkyo rep the same is true of the ND-S1 (which is not available in the US)

If that is the case for the Onkyo, then some very savvy people in the audio industry have been completely hoodwinked.

Why an 'Onkyo rep' would let *that* cat out of the bag completely escapes me - a clear price advantage over the Wadia (and the sales bonanza which would go with that) totally voided by the technical underpinnings of the ND-S1.

More details, please - I need to get this new info to the folks at Stereophile before they go to print.

hrm, a nextgen netbook as a DAP doesn't seem like that bad of an idea.

you'd have to come up with some way to control it while it's closed and such.

Maybe someone should make a netbook with a small screen on the outside with audio control buttons and market it to audiophiles.

netbook + Grub/Bantam + Mini3/Pimeta => nice portable/car setup.

To everyone, thanks so much for the input. $3500 is waaaaay out of my price range, but interesting all the same.

To P, I already have a Trends Audio TA-10 that I am not using... It's a pretty little thing.... I've never even really had the chance to use it.

Anyway, first things first. Will take me a few days to collect other pieces together...

I was at CES this year and had the opportunity to talk to the guys from Onkyo at the Venetian (why they were at the Venetian escapes me). I asked one of the reps in their booth about the ND-S1 and its digital output. He seemed unaware of that model but then told me "no Onkyo product is bypassing the internal DAC in the iPod".
So it is possible because he doesn't know of the product he could be wrong. Just passing along what I heard from Onkyo.

To R.,

Wow that is a monster thread. It's a novel. Thanks for the link though, it's great. I wish I could print it out.

We have reps like that here in Oz - if it isn't on their local radar, they have no clue. I've always found that really strange, but I admit that you can lose interest in the bleeding edge when you have been in a given field for decades.

the DLO homedock HD has a optical digital output to dervie digital signals from ipods and iphones and let you take it into your high end DAC and then into the rest of your system. I have been using it for a few months now and am very pleased.  it works as advertised and the best thing of all?....$50!!!!  take that wadia!   try it, for the price you have nothing to lose and even if you dont use the remote comtrol or video out, etc.  $50 is a SCREAMING BARGAIN for getting pure digital output form the ipod/iphone!!!  best of luck, T

Earlier in the thread someone mentions that the DLO homedock actually takes the analog signal from the ipod and converts it to digital for output.

So it's been a year, have there been any new developments that I've missed?

And if the DLO thing does what it claims to do, it really is worth the $50 isn't it.  But Apple locked its pins so that can't happen.  Am I right?

Surprisingly, I havent seen a single set of impressions on the i-20 on Head-Fi to date - maybe I just havent been looking - but its certainly cheap enough to warrant a lot of interest from those hellbent on going down this path. If I hadnt discovered the 6G Nano, I might be a little keener, but there is something about being able to listen to an iPod from the headphone out that just makes me very happy (yes, I have a LOD and a portable amp, but portable devices should sound good from the headphone out, IMO)
