A cheap amp like a Fiio is probably your best option, as tamu stated.

Pearlgirl, the Fiio E5 cost about £12 in the UK and is the size of an iPod shufle (early).

This is most probably the cheapest and simplest way to boost volume, bass and arguably quality of your portable device.

Or if you're using an iPod, the FiiO E1 would do nicely, and is absolutely miniscule.
