How big is your FLAC library?

Songs: 2575 Apple Lossless (3487 files that are mostly 192 to 320, and 1150 that are 128 and below)
Size: 64.38 gb (for the lossless files, 25.24 for the rest)
HDD: 320 Seagate 7200

I've actually started "downsizing" my collection into high VBR MP3. Not for space concerns, but because I jumped the gun when I got into hifi and thought I needed Lossless files of all my music, then I realized there's a lot of stuff I don't really listen to or care to listen to in high resolution.

Good thing iTunes has file encoding on the fly.

Also, I'm trying hard to replace my 128 and below files, but there's some stuff I have that's impossible to find at higher bit rates and too expensive to buy in physical format (discontinued, rare, etc.)

How come you use mp3 instead of aac on the downsize?

My ALAC library is about 630GB and close to 1,900 albums. And it sounds fantastic; computer sourced audio is the most convenient and best sounding way I have ever listened to music and it will keep getting better as the USB and Firewire DACs improve.

Because MP3s are more universal. If I ever want to use my collection with non-apple devices, I won't have to worry about AAC being supported or not. It's just a precaution.
