How Are The JVC Gummies
Apr 17, 2012 at 3:14 PM Post #16 of 22
This is an ancient thread that was suddenly revived. I like the JVC HA-FX67 marshmallows because they are so comfortable and as such, is a great starter IEM for people that prefer earbuds(which is almost always favored mainly because of comfort). Also, I've always thought the apple earbuds sounded pretty decent for cheap earbuds. Is the Sony MDR E828 really that much better?

Not quite. Some $10 earbuds give you $3 worth of sound, while other $10 ones are comparable to some that cost $20+. The Sennheiser MX400 and MX500 are ancient and very bass deficient. They have decent enough midrange. For just a small amount more than the E818, the E828 is more efficient, and has gotten better reviews. The Sony E828 has so much more bass than the MX400 and mx500, and is also  more efficient. The e828 is 16 ohms, while the MX400 and MX500 are 32 ohms. The e828 is 126 db/V(108 db/mw). The MX400 and MX500 are 119 db/V. The Sennheiser MX270 is probably  better than the Sony E828, however it is also more expensive.

I should have clarified my comments -- I meant Sony E828, not 818, as stated in previuos posts.  The Sennheiser 400/500 phones I was referring to are the current models MX-470/471 and MX-580/581, which I think are better sounding than my Sony E828.  The E828 has more visceral bass, but it gets overwhelmed too easily with busy music and looses clarity, IMO.  I think the cost difference of the MX-580 is worth the extra $$ over the E828.

What???? The MX400 and MX500 are very different than Sennheiser's newer earbuds. For one thing, the MX400 and MX500 are 32 ohms, and the newer ones are 16 ohms.  I have the MX580 and love it, however for someone on a tight budget the MX580 and its current price around $35 may be too expensive, especially considering that it is around 5x the price of the E828.  THe MX580 was under $25 a few months ago. The MX470 and MX270 have also gone up quite a bit in price. The Sony MDR-ED12 looks interesting. I haven't heard it yet. It is only around $9 or so.

The HA-FX67 is the JVC Air Cushions, not the Marshmallows. Imo the Air Cushions is okay, however I prefer the sound quality of the JVC Riptidz, which is less than half the price of the Air Cushions. For those who don't know, these are IEMs, not traditional earbuds. Most of this thread is about traditional style earbuds.  Typically IEMs give much more bass than traditional style earbuds, however the Sony E828 has much more bass than  typical traditional earbuds. With the extra bass of the E828 though, it also has a tendency to produce distortion that can be heard at higher volumes. At medium and especially lower volumes though  distortion on the E828 isn't noticeable.

the only marshmallows that sound good are the FX33. The gummies sound horrible.

Are those still available and how much worse are the current models considered to be?  I thought the FX33 and FX34 were basically the same?  Just curious because I recommended the marshmallows to a few people after owning a couple pairs of FX33s but then I listened to a newer pair and was let down...thought it was just subjective since I'd bought better IEMs than I've had in the past in the interim.  Are the FX33s really better or just better than the gummies?

Sorry, that's what I meant.

I'm considering picking up the HA-FX5 Gumy Plus buds as part of a cheap portable music system, unsure how they'll sound or what can be modded about them.
