I hope these fit in. They came out in the 80's

Def Leppard - Pyromania
Quiet Riot - Metal Health
Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a Madman (don't get new remastered/remixed version)

Some bands that made songs I like, but my copies of those songs are on 80's compilation CDs

Eurithmycs(sp)
Men at Work
Little River Band
Pretenders
Pat Benatar

Peter Gabriel - So (preferring 3, but So had the hits)
Talking Heads - Remain In Light
King Crimson - Discipline
The Police - Zenyatta Modatta
Enya - The Celts

IMO those artist are pretty darn essential.

heh D-EJ915, i think we're the only two people on the boards that have the "Transformers: The Movie - Soundtrack." how cool is "Nothin's Gonna Stand in Our Way" and "Instruments of Destruction."

hey, glad to see another shoegazer fan! BRMC takes cues from a few of 80's bands, such as the Jesus and Mary Chain as mentioned, as well as a healthy dose of Joy Division.

i think there was a shoegazing thread not too long ago, but if you're starting out, be sure to at least pick up these for your music library:

Ride - Nowhere
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Catherine Wheel - Ferment
Slowdive - Souvlaki
The Boo Radleys - Learning to Walk

cheers!

oh well, i guess "quintessential" doesn't mean it has to be good, right? just, uhm, sort of "it captures the spirit"... in which case i second "the final countdown" as a major 80's classic, right along the assorted oeuvre of stock, aitken, waterman (kylie minogue, rick astley, jason donovan, bros...) get anything from them and you know what 80's pop was really like... on the surface.

now on to the real stuff - just some of my "essential favorites":

the cure: kiss me kiss me kiss me
the smiths: the smiths, the queen is dead
the jesus & mary chain: psychocandy
new model army: thunder and consolation
the waterboys: this is the sea
men at work: cargo
talk talk: the colour of spring
the clash: london calling
dinosaur jr: you're living all over me, bug
hüsker dü: new day rising, warehouse: songs & stories
the replacements: let it be
fugazi: repeater
no means no: wrong
rem: reckoning
dire straits: making movies
bruce springsteen: darkness on the edge of town
neil young: freedom

these are essential AND enjoyable
