A friend of mine will be moving to the city soon, so he needs a home theater steup for his apartment. He already has a nice, 1080p TV. His max budget is $1000.

So far he is considering an Onkyo 606 reciever, an Oppo DVD player, and whatnot...So his budget for speakers is $500. He does not want surround, but a sub is OK. They need to be floor standers or bookshelves w/ stands, as there will not be any room for them on the TV stand, and he cannot mount them on the walls. They need to fill the average NYC living room with sound.

So, any suggestions for speakers/against the Onkyo (he'd like the room to upgrade to surround if he ever wants to)?

Onkyo's mid-line stuff should be reasonably good. For speakers, consider something from AV123 like the X-SLS Encore.

I would recommend getting a Yamaha Sound Projector like the YSP-3000 instead. I have the older YSP-1000 and I don't miss my old surround setup (with its rat's nest of cables) at all.

My friend is extremely hot on Polk for some reason. Right now he's looking at getting the RTi8's for $150. Any thoughts?

Not the worst speaker for the money, should make for a decent starter set.
