I've had shure e3c's for a number of years. I've always used them at the gym or on an airplane. I never noticed a hiss before, but I put them on in my office today and it was noticeable and annoying. Are all iem's like this? Anything I can do to get rid of the hiss?

Noise like that won't be caused by the headphones. Airplanes and gyms are noisy enough to cover the noise produced by your playback equipment.

Sources could include the recording itself, the device you're using to play the music--some of these are very noisy--or introduced when you converted the music. Try the same headphones with another device. Try them with your home CD player. Try them on a friend's music player. Try different headphones on your player; some roll off the highs more than others, and this will reduce the hiss.
