First should admit I know little to nothing about hiphop/rap. My buddy gave me a Notorious B.I.G. mixtape which I can't stop playing. I asked for more, and he suggested to check out The Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, and 2Pac. I've been checking them out but don't like any of those artists at all, especially Wu-Tang and Public Enemy. Wow they are terrible! 2Pac is OK but I only like a few of his more melodic songs so far. I'd like to expand my horizons further, maybe one day Wu-Tang and Public Enemy will grow on me but for now can anyone make any suggestions for stuff to check out?

NWA- Straight Outta Compton
Dr. Dre- The Chronic
Snoop Doggy Dogg- Doggystyle
Ice Cube- AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted

this is a very strong west coast start, which makes sense for you since you seem to not like Wu Tang or Public Enemy (I don't really like East Coast rap either, Public Enemy being the big exception for me)

Souls of Mischief- 93 Til Infinity
try this one out for a more underground sound
YouTube - Souls of Mischief - 93 'Til Infinity

there is a lot out there...........
other insanely good albums for samples of various sounds:
Black Star (Mos Def and Talib Kweli)- Black Star
El-P - Fantastic Damage

If you only get one hip hop album ever let it be:

samples-black-star-large1.jpg

The greatest hip hop album of the 90s, it is the quintessential story about what is right and what is wrong about hip hop in a time when it was really a lot of unintelligent drivel. It still rings true in today's auto tone/retard infested hip hop genre.

Also The Roots are a great way to get into rap as well.

Is the mixtape labeled, i.e., do you know the names of the tracks on it? That might help other head-fiers recommend stuff. It also might help to know what other kinds of music you dig.

Just taking a wild stab, I'd say try some older OutKast, like Aquemini or Stankonia.

Wow.....

Ok first of all 2pac was the best rapper of all time. You have to start there but you should check out more classic rap. Stuff like Sugar Hill Gang, Grand Master Flash, Arrested Development. Mr. Wendel by Arrested Development is a very good song. I don't listen to rap much anymore, I find almost all new rap horrible. Also Dr. Dre is very good. I am not a fan of Snoop but a lot of people will suggest him.

What tracks where on that Biggy Mixtape?

and what songs did you list to from Wu Tang?

Try:
Raekwon - Incarcerated Scarfaces, Ice Cream
Mos Def - Auditorium
Method Man - Da Rockwilda
