Really, first disk is so-so but the second aka "Converting Vegetarians: The Other Side" is something wonderful.

I haven't looked recently

Is it only my CD or does Infected Mushroom - The Gathering have errors in the CD?

For testing I used EAC.

Optrix made it worse!?? (24.3 % to 22.8 %)

When listening to the track on the computer I hear no problems. But when listening to it in my CD player it hangs and stops playing. Burning to CD-R will solve this problem (one of the reasons why I prefer Redbook over SACD).

It was a new sealed CD from Yoyo Records. I also got B.P Empire from Yoyo and there were no errors on that CD.

BTW, listened to a few tracks and it is higher quality than Astral Projection but not as good bass.

Edit: 'Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegetarians' also has "suspicious position" errors on the last track of BOTH CDs. This can't be a coincidence, so I believe this is just normal for this group or Yoyo Records.

Review batch #1: Psy trance (very fast trance).

Infected Mushroom - The Gathering

Transparency: 5.7
Speed: 9.5
Mid-bass: 8.9
Detail: 4.9
Soundstage: 5.0

Overall: 6.80

Those "smurfs" talking are a bit transparent.

Often has annoying slow "speed" sounds (track 2, 07:30) where you don't need fast headphones, like 1-2 speed rating. This is probably made on purpose for listening with more forgiving and slow equipment so it can sound "cool". Though the edges of those sounds are very sharp and it sounds annoying with my K1000.

Often fast bass but not as heavy as Astral Projection.

Infected Mushroom - B.P. Empire

Transparency: 5.2
Speed: 9.5
Mid-bass: 6.8
Detail: 8.2
Soundstage: 6.3

Overall: 7.20

String instrument is good quality.

I enjoyed this album more than The Gathering, because of the larger soundstage and because it didn't sound so annoying.

Also rated my old albums at the same time:

Astral Projection - Dancing Galaxy

Transparency: 4.95
Speed: 9.5
Mid-bass: 9.2
Detail: 4.625
Soundstage: 5.10

Overall: 6.675

I got impressed after I upgraded my system and heard improvements in detail which I did not expect! This album has sort of like cymbal sounds and weird sounds in track 3 like thick rain drops (00:53 - 01:33) and triangle sounds (01:34 - 01:59).

Astral Projection - Another World

Transparency: 4.7
Speed: 9.9
Mid-bass: 10
Detail: 4.2
Soundstage: 4.5

Overall: 6.66 (oh, a devil album
very_evil_smiley.gif
)

Not a big soundstage but very cool with the sounds going around in circles. Track 9 is the slowest track but is cool where you can hear the sound coming from the floor BEHIND you and fly right up to where you sit!

Very bad quality but I can still enjoy this album because of the complexity.

Oh, and the bass is so good it makes me curse.

Revision december 16 2005

Astral Projection - Another World @ 768 khz upsampling

*Transparency: 6.5
Speed: 9.9
Mid-bass: 10
*Detail: 5
*Soundstage: 7.25 (Size: 4.5 / Accuracy: 10)

Overall: 7.73

T: 768 kHz upsampling makes it much more transparent and it feels more real.

D: I hear things I never heard before.

SA: In track 9 both sounds fly up from the floor (in a circular fashion from the left) behind you to where you sit on both sides of your body, and they stay there hovering for 1 second and slightly fall down a few cm. There are subtle sounds that keep hovering up and down all the time which I have never heard until my last power cord upgrade.
In most tracks there are multiple sounds that keep hovering around the soundstage, these sounds blend together if upsampling isn't used. This is a very complex album that NEEDS the best audio system to show its limit.

After upgrading my system a little more I can hear more improvements in this album than any other, classical music gave the smallest improvement.
I always knew there was something special with this album, I was right. All it needed was some more resolution to show it!

After I listened for a few hours to my HDCD reference classical recordings (at 768 kHz) and switched over to this album I was shocked, it was higher quality and not as much muddy! Psy Trance definitely needs higher resolution more than any other genre.

Astral Projection - Amen

Transparency: 4.85
Speed: 9.8
Mid-bass: 9.7
Detail: 4.5
Soundstage: 4.8

Overall: 6.73

Great mid-bass similar to Another World, but not great on all tracks. On lesser equipment the bass sort of never stops (track 2 and 6), it just goes up and down in frequency. But on my rig they are in fact small fast beats! There are also normal heavy beats on top of that.

Edit: Bass sounds faster after upgrading my system!

_______________________________

Astral Projection - The Astral Files

Transparency: 4.4
Speed: 9.5
Mid-bass: 9.2
Detail: 4.2
Soundstage: 4.1

Overall: 6.28

Not as heavy bass but "rounder" with a bigger impact. I noticed on some tracks there were beats in between the beats. For example in track 6 at 03:00: At first listen it goes "BOOM-BOOM+cymbal-BOOM-BOOM+cymbal", when listening closer it sounds: "BOOM-pause-pause-pause-boom-boom-cymbal-boom-boom-boom-BOOM-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-cymbal-boom-boom-boom-boom". The small beats go in a melody like in Another World. The BPM is around 144 for this track. So it's about 8 tiny beats per second at the fastest parts. With my rig those beats don't blend together at all, so lesser equipment can be used. These "thin" beats in track 6 sound similar to those in Another World track 4, except they are super-heavy.

This is one of the worst quality albums from Astral Projection.

_______________________________

Astral Projection - Trust In Trance

Transparency: 4.43
Speed: 9.1
Mid-bass: 9.0
Detail: 4.25
Soundstage: 5.07

Overall: 6.37

Weak bass but sometimes fast.

Not as many speed sounds as other albums by this group.

Soundstage and detail is higher in the beginning of CD but then gets worse.
_______________________________

As you can see, upgrading the audio rig is only worth it for the bass and speed. I am listing the equipment and the rating of them also:

Mid-bass

Nordost Valhalla power cord: 10

PS Audio xStream Statement Power Cable: 9.9

Krell power amp with large transformer like Krell KAV-500i: 10

Cary 303/300 CD player: 10

AKG K1000 earspeakers: 10 (80+ Hz only)

Graham Slee SOLO headamp: 8?

Speed

Nordost Valhalla interconnect: 9.95

AKG K1000 earspeakers: 10

Krell power amp: 9.9

Cary 303/300 CD player: 9.9

AKG K501: 9.5?

K501 + Graham Slee SOLO would be the best combo for most trance albums, however not for Astral Projection. Spending 25 times more for a K1000 rig is a bit extreme but it was definitely worth it for Another World album alone!

I do it differently this time, I compare these albums and rank them. This list will change after I have listened to them more.
From here on I will do the ratings based from memory.

(The highest overall quality album on top.)

Shiva Chandra - Auricular

Transparency: 9.0
Speed: 9.9
Mid-bass: 8
Detail: 6+?
Soundstage: 5

Overall: 7.58

T: Many of the subtle sounds are very realistic. Scary.

S: Weird sounds I never heard before. Like ripping pants and whining door type of sounds.

B: Heavy but slow bass.

D: Weird new invented sounds which need a good system to show the detail. Good decay and timbre of the system is needed.

S: Nothing special. Subtle sounds around soundstage and bass in middle.

Minimalist Trance seems to be the winner here. It also sounds cleaner than normal Psy Trance. Shiva Chandra has invented new sounds that are audiophile friendly.

S: A true reference album for speed. It has many different speeds for every system, slow to fast, it even has electric guitars (8 score) for those with Grados.
Track 7 is the fastest where the speed sound matches my system perfectly. The "increasing speed sound" starts blending together very late. That sound usually hovers somewhere between 9.7 and 10.1. The whole track has that sound and variations of it!

B: Bass has lot of information. This album has many different forms of bass, it's great to test your system with!

Here is what is says on Psyshop.

"Mastered at 4cn studios up to the highest standard of quality to pull every punch right out of your speakers"

Marc et Claude - You Own The Sound

Transparency: 5.0
Mid-bass: 9.0
Detail: 5.9
Vocals: 6.4
Soundstage: 5.9

Overall: 6.44

Bought this album just because of track 3 'Free Spirit' (Maria Nayler). But this album is not that bad. Good vocals in track 2 'Tremble'.

Track 13 is cool where you get the dynamic speed and bass sounds at the same time, the bass appears to be bigger and deeper, and it sounds kind of powerful.

DJ Tiesto - In Search Of Sunrise 3

Transparency: 3.8
Mid-bass: 6.0

Overall: 4.9

Horrible. Beginning of CD is higher quality but then gets worse. DJ Tiesto is the best DJ in the world, I bought all his albums without listening to them first
frown.gif
. Armin Van Buuren is higher quality but slightly slower.

Edit: All his albums aren't horrible. 'DJ Tiesto - Just Be' is good quality that is scary transparent sometimes. I don't have DJ Tiesto phobia anymore...

Edit2: The muddiness problem is fixed after making the audio system more transparent. This album actually sounds good now.

Decay of the subtle triangle sounds in track 12 is something I didn't notice before.

The male vocals are much more realistic than female.

B: Bass is fast on some tracks (track 7-10).

D: More detail has appeared from a power cord upgrade. I hear things I never heard before.

V: There is lot of vocal information and emotion in the recording. This album sounds best with vacuum tubes, otherwise it's too harsh.

This album has benefited the most from upgrading my system.

T: Almost doesn't feel like I'm listening to ear speakers, like other albums with the same rating.

V: Information and emotion in her (Linda Mertens) voice needs high-end system.

S: Subtle echo makes soundstage feel bigger. Track 5 has cool soundstage width effects (40+ meters) that sounds realistic and somewhat scary.

Sounds clean.

D: Has low-level detail that I can't hear with HD590.

My favorite album after my audio system was complete.

B: Mid-bass is not good but deep bass is so insane I don't even hear it.

D: Surprisingly good detail for trance music!

V: Very few vocals. But they are barely okay.

S: Nice soundstage, deep and wide.

This CD is discontinued so I will say no more.

Edit: I have a CD available here.

Chicane - Far From The Maddening Crowds @ 768 kHz

Transparency: 8.5
Mid-bass: 7 (Deep bass: 10)

Vocals: 6.5

Upsampling made me hear things I never heard before, a new world of sounds has opened up! A reference system with a low noise floor is required for this album.

B: Heavy mid-bass in track 5. Deep bass like 'Far From The Maddening Crowds' on some tracks.

V: More vocals and more realistic.

S: Great soundstage on beginning of track 9, lot of space. But other tracks are not that good.

Track 4 'Saltwater (original)' is the best track, I think many would agree.

Chicane - Behind The Sun @ 768 kHz

Transparency: 8.5
Mid-bass: 7.5 (Deep bass: 10)
Detail: 9.7
Vocals: 8.5
Soundstage: 7

Overall: 8.24

D: Very subtle shimmering highs (track 5 02:29 for example). A solid-state system is required to hear it good. "Crystal" sounds in track 1 blend together if upsampling isn't used.

Power cable upgrade and upsampling turned this albums into one of my best. There's not as much blending of sounds now and I can hear it like it's supposed to sound. Requires an audio system with great timbre.

Sylver - Chances

Transparency: 5.5
Mid-bass: 6.5
Detail: 7
Vocals: 8.9
Soundstage: 5.5

Overall: 6.7

V: Emotion and information in her (Silvy De Bie) voice needs high-end system. Sounds best with tubes.

My favorite vocals album (after 1 listen) because it's much faster than 'Lesiem - Auracle' and still has high quality vocals.

'Sylver - Nighttime Calls' doesn't have as high quality vocals.
'Sylver - Little Things' is not worthy for review, there is horrible distortion in the vocals.

ATB - No Silence

Transparency: 6.5
Mid-bass: 8
Detail: 6
Vocals: 6
Soundstage: 6

Overall: 6.5

T: Has some nature sounds on half of the tracks. Birds most of the time.

B: Very nice heavy bass but not fast, except on track 6 (bass melody).

D: Piano has some decay but not so good (track 5). Triangle sound in track 8 is subtle and has some decay. There are many subtle sounds that I had not noticed before, a low noise floor of the rig is required (PS Audio High Current Ultimate Outlet).

S: Soundstage is not that big but it has some air.

Sibilance in your system will easily show on this album (track 1 'Marrakech' and 2 'Ecstasy'). Aftermarket power cord made it more bearable with my K1000. Vocal harshness in track 3 needs tubes.

The highest quality album from ATB, and one of my favorite albums ever.

B: Sometimes bass is heavy.

V: Very few vocals.

S: Soundstage often has some air.

CD1 is very slow and high quality, but varies between each track. CD2 is much faster and MUCH lower quality but has deep bass. So the ratings are for CD1 only.

I found this album boring and not worth the money.

2nd best DJ in the world for some reason (should be 1st IMO).
Decay of piano in track 4 is high quality. String instrument in track 7 is okay.
Soundstage is bigger in the beginning of CD, but then gets smaller. I have all Armin's CDs and don't regret I bought them. All his albums are good.

ATB - Dedicated

T: Almost scary transparency (9+) in track 3 ('Get High'), it has real life recorded sounds. Many times I though some sounds came from another part of my apartment and went to look
biggrin.gif
. The rest of the tracks don't have that transparency though. Very few nature sounds like birds and ocean (track 4 and 12).

B: Very nice heavy bass but not fast.

D: Sounds like the same piano as in No Silence. Not good but works for this kind of music.

V: Great vocals by Roberta Carter Harrison, sounds more realistic than the other albums by ATB.

S: Not as much air as No Silence.

Track 1 is nice where it progressively adds up melodies, I counted 7 melodies at once at the end of that track.
This album sounded great with Audigy2+Sennheiser HD590, was one of my favorite albums. Not much improvement from a high-end system.

Review batch #4: New Age (very slow trance).

Decided to skip A/B-ing (to save more time) and go through each album one at a time. Note: Albums at the end of my reviews may get higher score.

Era - The Very Best Of

Transparency: 9

Vocals: 9.1 (Solo: 9 / Chorus: 9.2)
Soundstage: 6

Overall: 8.17

B: Has high quality drums on some tracks.

D: High detail on some tracks.

S: Not that wide soundstage. 30-40 meters rear soundstage in track 3.

Became one of my favorite albums after 10 listens. Great rhythm and chorus like in Lesiem - Auracle.

Enigma - MCMXC A.D

Transparency: 9
Mid-bass: 7
Detail: 9.2

B: Great mid-bass that has a big impact. But it is slow.

D: Highs shimmer much more compared to my other albums.

S: Great soundstage width (40+ meters) in track 6.

Low noise floor is a must for this album, there is decay that goes on for 2+ seconds.

This album definitely benefits from high-end equipment! Especially track 6 where it shows soundstage, mid-bass and highs at the same time (needs tubes and Valhalla power cord).

V: Very nice vocals and realistic too!

C: Chorus almost as realistic as 'Orff: Carmina Burana'.

My favorite album, great rhythm where sounds join together and vocals and chorus are synchronized to the beats. Very natural sounding, especially with tubes!

Delerium - Semantic Spaces

Transparency: 7.5
Mid-bass: 7
Detail: 8.5
Vocals: 7 (solo only)
Soundstage: 7.7

Overall: 7.54

S: Soundstage not natural but better than 'Karma'. Soundstage big in beginning of CD but then gets smaller.

Sounds very similar to Enigma. But a little more like trance (track 8).

Enigma - Voyageur

Transparency: 6.5
Mid-bass: 6.5
Detail: 6
Vocals: 3 (solo only)
Soundstage: 6

Overall: 5.6

V: I don't like how they modified the vocals. They are not only more harsh like in 'Cross Of Changes' but also much less transparent! Is this supposed to sound cool?

Not worth my time or money.

Enigma - The Screen Behind The Mirror

Transparency: 7
Mid-bass: 7
Detail: 8.5
Vocals: 6 (solo only)
Soundstage: 7.5

Overall: 7.2

D: Track 3 is the best where you need high-end equipment. Highs shimmer like in 'MCMXC A.D'. The rest of the CD is bad though.

V: Harsh vocals on most tracks.

Track 3 'Gravity Of Love' is the best, that track is also on 'Enigma - Love Sensuality Devotion' album.

Only buy if you are a fan.

Shpongle - Are You Shpongled?

Transparency: 9.6

OMG, OMG, OMG... etc.

Shpongle - Nothing Lasts But Nothing Is Lost

Transparency: 9
Speed: 10
Mid-bass: 8.5
Detail: 9
Vocals: 6?
Soundstage: 8

Overall: 8.4+

T: Not as transparent as the other albums.

S: Great speed sounds (track 4 00:06 - 00:09) that needs a Nordost Valhalla interconnect. It is still too fast for my system!! Nordost Valhalla speaker cable ($10k) for K1000 would be required also!

V: Very few vocals, on most tracks there are no vocals at all.

Shpongle - Tales Of The Inexpressible

Transparency: 9.3
Mid-bass: 7.5
Detail: 7.8
Vocals: 7.6
Soundstage: 8.1

Overall: 8.06

It has recorded real life sounds, like beginning of track 6. The transparency is sometimes scary even with eyes open, I'm scared to try with eyes closed.

Many genres mixed into 1 album, I think many would enjoy this. The BPM keeps changing all the time, even in the same track. The weirdest album I have ever listened to.

Hallucinogen - In Dub

Transparency: 6+
Speed: 9.5
Mid-bass: 9.5
Detail: 9
Soundstage: 6

Overall: 8.0+

T: Track 3 as transparent as Shpongle.

B: Slow bass but high quality.

Much slower than the two other Hallucinogen albums.

Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegetarians CD2

Transparency: 6
Speed: 9.7-
Mid-bass: 6+
Detail: 9
Soundstage: 8.5

Overall: 7.8

B: Bass is slow on all tracks except track 8.

D: Great detail with long decay, especially beginning of track 4 (6 seconds decay). String instrument in track 12 is much better than B.P. Empire. Great piano in track 13.

S: Wide soundstage but subtle.

This is the highest quality album from Infected Mushroom, and it got the worst review on Amazon!

I recommend you listen to "The Mystery Of The Yeti" albums. There is Part One and Part Two (1996 and 1999 respectively).

They are the combined talents of The Infinity Project (Raja Ram, Graham Wood), Total Eclipse, Doof and Hallucinogen (Simon Posford). In my opinion, they are a must have for psytrance and psybience fans.
