I received a lovely package not long ago. It took just under 3 days to travel from UK to Singapore (truly impressive..!). I wanted to get a nice cable to hook up the Melco S100/2 switch to my incoming Wavedream NET.
ended up wanting to give the Muon Pro filter system a go. PMed
@teknorob23 and as usual it was a pleasure chatting with Rob, who has a lovely habit of going off tangent (as he says so himself) but somehow it makes it all the more enjoyable conversing with him.
The gear came well packaged. the filter system came in a nice suede pouch. the Muon Pro cable itself is a piece of work; looks super thick, though most it is from the outer sheath, and the innards are 3 separate runs of cabling in a white shielding layer (see pic below). the cable comes in a standard 1.5m length and is soft and flexible enough to route easily. the sufficient length also allows for easy contortion to connect to upside down ethernet ports.
The filter system is quite sizeable. larger than their Eno filter. it's pretty light and has no loose parts or rattling. there is a short length of fixed umbilical ethernet cabling and it comes with 4 sticker footers u can attach yourself.
they went all out on the plugs. looks like engraved/laser etched branding on one end, and a directional indicator on the other (u can make out Pro> on one plug, so I assume that is the end to go into the network transport/streamer).
My new transport hasn't arrived yet, so in the meantime have placed this in my lounge system, in between an Uptone ER and sotm streamer. it took the place of a 1m length of Pink Faun ethernet. Rob recommends at least 100hrs of use before it hits it's sweet spot; I enjoyed the Muon Pro filter system right out of the box.
As I reported back to Rob, having it in the chain, feels like it has somehow "cleaned up" the whole FR. seems like the noise floor has dropped and there is better separation better staging, and it got rid of some glare too. the sense of realism and 3d staging seems even more pronounced. there is some added depth, meatiness and lushness to female vocals, and takes away a hint of "dryness" and edginess/sharpness to singers like Stacey Kent.
Some usage notes:
- in contrast to their Eno system, with the Muon Pro, the filter section comes first, before the Muon ethernet cable which plugs in last to the streamer/dac.
- I preferred it together with the Uptone ER than without the ER (direct from router to streamer)
- despite it allowing for 1gbps bandwidth, I preferred it from across the ER moat ie out of the 100mbps "clean" port. Seemed a bit flat and subdued when using it out of the "dirty" side.
- Rob suggested I try it without any fiber connection in the chain, and I did, but preferred it with.
I enjoy using the album above for comparisons and critical listening; I think it has the right amount of dynamic range, is able to demonstrate staging/placement, and is recorded well. her voice is wonderful too, and overall her songs are enjoyable to listen to.
As flawed as sighted comparisons are, and taking into account the usual biases at play.. take my impressions with a (often huge) pinch of salt. I'd recommend you try it for yourselves and see/hear if u can perceive a difference. I didn't worry much about buying it and not liking it or not perceiving any difference with the filter system, mainly because of their 30 day try at home policy. I think this is a really nice fall back to have. I made use of this the last time I tried their Eno filter system; returned it to Rob/NA after a couple of weeks and no questions asked + immediate hassle free refund.
at the time, I felt the Eno filter didn't bring anything new to the table for my system, so ended up sending it back. the price for the Muon Pro system is rather spectacular especially for "just" a length of cabling + a passive box.. but I do feel differently about the Muon Pro system and am going to be keeping it. am thinking of trying out their AES/EBU cable and seeing how it fares against my Bibacord mk2. am contemplating their Muon USB cable too but am trying hard to convince myself that I'm perfectly happy with my TWL Passion usb cables (which are, again really really bang for buck).
