do you know if the hm1000's presentation and sound has the same forwardness in your face like the r2r2000?
yes it have same sound character as r2r2000, but more pure, detailed, dense and refined.

I suppose the problem could be in the amplification of HM1000

HF really has the bad amp sometimes. I had a modded version of 603 for 3 months and it was just an amazing experience. I've never heard such deep and powerful bass from a DAP in that price range. But from the box it just me….

Also, 901R has a Himalaya chip, and with a classic card it sounds really pure, but with a balanced card it is just another dap.

PS: This is just my memory, but is the HM1000 really that bad that the lpg outperforms it? Because LPG is just one of the best devices in terms of dynamics, but it has no treble at all... So hm is even worse in that?

My third(!) HM1000 Red with PCM1702 dacs broke. Which is annoying. But I was pleasantly surprised that Hifiman sent me as replacement the new HM1000 Red with their own FPGA-based R2R Himalaya dacs.

Based on Hifiman’s numbers, Himalaya (also spelt as HYMALAYA) scores favorably against TOTL NOS dacs, and has much lower power consumption as well.

I find Himalaya-based HM1000 Red to be quite a bit of improvement on the original model. Main deviations I've noticed:
-Background is blacker when pushed to high volume and gain.
-Less congestion and more depth on the soundstage.
-Sharper, less vigorous bass.
-Improved treble timbre: smoother and less glary.
-More moderate rise/drops on volume steps.
-Battery level is now accurately reflected on source device in BT mode.
-Besides new HYMALAYA logo, glass front cover now has a geometrical pattern design.

I got one as a replacement for my PCM1702 version a couple of months ago. I think it sounds better than the PCM1702 version. I would say it sounds no worse than my Hiby RS6, only a bit different. And the portability of the HM1000 is of course unbeatable 😃 I think the battery lasts considerably longer than the PCM1702 version. At least when playing from microsd.

Forgot to mention, new HM1000 Red doesn't come with fancy black box anymore either

I think you're right and battery does last longer. Most likely due to very low power consumption on Himalaya dac, even though from what I recall HM1000 uses two of them, one for each channel.

I Can't Get Started...on how amazing this DAP is. I've only been using it as a LDAC dongle and it provides sublime SQ. The built in amp is surprisingly good, I hope this device can 'grow old' with my WM1Z :fingers_crossed:

Anyone has experience of safe opening HM1000 for battery change purposes?
Not sure if it's of any help to you, Romi Audio does mods on HM1000 so they're experienced at safe opening.
