managed to upgrade the firmware 2.004
you need to shutdown and remove the battery else the unit will powerup back on if you insert the SD card..
and the system will not update..my previous version 2.003
 
So this is the procedure for me..
step 2
shutdown and removed the battery. Insert the SD card with the new firmware..
install the battery and follow the procedure 
 While pressing the HOME button, hold the Power key up until the HM-901 is power on. After the screen is on, release the power key. Then release the HOME button until the hifiman logo disappears. Now the player will be in recovery mode....

Yes, and I also found I needed to go into the menu and do a total shut down and restart and then everything worked.

I also found that I had to do a total shutdown from the menu.

After completing the update i am now able to play my .dsf files. Unfortunately the 901S doesn't seem to be reading the tag information - I have to play them via browsing folders. Not a biggie but it would be nice to be able to get to the DSD files via Artist or Album.

Hi everyone! I`m thinking to buy elfidelity full balanced card instead my original balanced. There was an info in this topic some pages ago - that you loosing hi/lo gain switch, when you use original 901 with new amps from Elfidelity and Gold minibox. So I was wondering can anybody confirm this info?

I use it. The sound when the buffer is used, improves a little and it is convent to use on the desktop and keeps the battery charged. Works well for the 901s as well.

Yea, with 901s/901u gain works this way because unlike original 901 there is no physical button on the side of unit. As I right understand there is a difference between FW`s for 901 and 901s/901u, and original 901 with latest FW doesnt have gain switch in the UI menu.

For all those, who like me were interested in new Elfidelity amp cards. Thats what I`ve got from hifiman support team a couple days ago:
 
According to our technician, the high/low gain  on the HM901 will not work with the EIfidelity amp card. So it will be neither high gain or low gain with the EIfidelity amp card. 
 
According to our technician,the specification like max output is the specification when testing the amp card alone. When paired with HM901 or HM650, for instance, the actual output would be a little bit lower than that specification. 
Take EIfidelity amp card for example. The max output for EIfidelity balanced amp card is 4.6V. When paired with HM901, it is lower than 4.6V. Our technicians have tested the output power of EIfidelity am card on HM901 for you, it is 3.2 V. 
 
So, for now there is no reason to jump from old balanced card to new one Elfidelity. With old dap`s like 901 you are gonna lose in output power comparing to original balanced card - 3.2v against 3.9v. I just hope that hifiman gonna add UI gain switch option in future FW update, so old users like me can enjoy new amp cards in full potential....

But the power issue only applies if you're using headphones right and not iems?

The limitation will apply for whatever you plug in, but as you suggest this won't be an issue with IEMs since they are much more sensitive. If it's 110dB / mW for instance you would have destroyed your hearing log before you reach to the limitation.
 
 
With headphones the limitation will be real, but I assume the difference between 3.2V and 3.9V is marginal in practical use unless you use really ineffective headphones.

anyone using HM901S + balanced amp card + TG334.. what is yr volume at low gain? Mine is range from 4 to 5 sometime 6 cause the music file too soft. I heard most use only 1 plus to 2 plus only.... i am quite alarmed...
