It is wide and tall but not very thick device. If you have some kind of protection for you Note3, you can add extra things in that pocket.

That's right, and I think 901/802 is just the opposite which is pretty thick but not too tall and wide, so I feel a pouch for it is pretty cool, whereas my note3 is kinda big for my pouch. But still, the amd/dac combination is still unbeatable in terms of who takes more space :)

I would def use a bag in any case, the North face looks very nice actually,
but to me,
however 901 sounds a bit closer to my liking than any of the new daps, it is def time for them to move on with the ui,build quality and ultimately to my ears it doesn't sound that different from their older offering 801 from a set of cans.
Into my Naim system it does give an audible difference for the better, but not tru any cans i own, so i don't see the point in either portability(since ur not gonna hear it) neither in spending the money over dx90 which is far better built and lighter , better ui etc.. for outdoor use. plus it poss is a better sound match with 846.
Just my opinion of course:)

I definitely prefer the 901 to the 801 both in terms of SQ and features. The 901 is more resolving, has no treble roll off and no channel imbalance at low levels, plays 88.2kHz files and no extra box sticking out when driving balanced headphones ... and it supports cover art, which to me is important too.

The 801 has a warmer tone, but at the expense of transparency.

I have the 901 in whatever pocket I have available, but I often listen with it in my hand - and then I can see the cover art on the display...

I'll be receiving the 802 probably next week, depends on the delivery and 901 probably 2 weeks later, I can post something up when I get it. But from what I heard the 802's SQ is on the warmer side and is great for vocal which is what I listen to mostly( e.g. jazz)

Vocal is the better thing on the 802. While the rest like details and seperation are better on the 901. Both are gd but it depends in your listening preference. One issue I encounter is that some sd card (no problem on 901) especially same brand and of higher speed will not allow the 802 to shut down and just restart after a few second when ones switching off. Just remember that you should hear the clicks sound twice then your machine will then be fully shut down. To be frank, it is of no point using very high speed card on the hifiman.

Rgds

I wouldn't call the 901 bright at all, especially when compared to a Studio or X5.
To me it sounds (with Mini Box) quite flat, and vocals sound superb.
However if the 802 sounds like the 801 you will love it.

Any thoughts on how to make the display easier to read in sunlight? I use mine mostly out side
