HIFIMAN HE400i 2020 Version

Has anyone tried oratory1990's EQs? I tried both of his EQs and it just mutes or lowers the overall sound. Is it supposed to do that? First time trying out equalizers because 400i 2020's sound is too piercing for my taste. I am assuming it's the treble. I'm no expert in describing sound. I know for sure the the bass is pretty light. I'm no basshead but I would like it to be a bit more impactful. It's my first time delving into headphones. I have been more of an iem guy for about 8 years. I also have the kph-30i and I find those a bit better sounding. I have a hip dac and waiting for my balanced cables I ordered off Amazon to arrive. I hope it improves the sound otherwise I think I'll just return them. Does anyone have any advice or suggestion on these headphones? I really like the design and comfort of these cans. Thank you.

I have, both with PEQ and FBEQ settings. Honestly, I don't think this headphone needs as much EQ as some others. You could even get away with analog EQ in the form of the Schiit Loki and be just fine. Maybe take down 8K by 2-3 DB while using the Bass booster on the Hip-DAC. Give your brain some time to burn in, and If you still don't like it better that the Koss, then maybe it's not your cup of tea. At that point, give the darker, but still resolving, Sennheiser HD58X a listen. Cheers

Liked the HE400i 2020's more than the HE-5XX I tried out. Burnt both of them in with variable white and pink and brown noise over some days, and listened to both on and off for gaming, YouTube, and music for the period of a month.

I also found the 5XX to sound rather shrill-y on phones and laptops, but sounded closer to the HE-400i 2020 when plugged into my Modi and Magni 3+'s DAC and amp. Whereas the 400i sounded great still on phones and laptops. When both plugged into my Schiit setup, I still find the 400i to sound better overall. It is also cheaper to boot. And build quality is far superior compared to the HE-5XX. No competition.

Today I received a Monolith Liquid Spark amp and immediately am noticing I like the sound with the HE-400i 2020's a noticeable amount more than the sharpness of the Magni 3+. It feels like it rounds out the upper ends more because it sometimes sounded unpleasant to my ears, overly sharp, with the Magni. But with the LS the presentation is even better!

So, I will be returning the Schiit Magni 3+, in favor of the Liquid Spark, for my tastes and for these headphones.
Will be comparing it to Schiit Vali 2+ (hybrid tube headphone amp) next month.

I'm thinking about grabbing a pair of these open box on HIFIMAN site. Good deal if you still get all the accessories, box and are in new condition. Has anyone got these? I'm also wondering if the open box will ship from China and I wait weeks for them. Or should I just spend the extra $30 and get a brand new set in 2 days from Amazon. I'm really excited about trying out some planars for the first time.

There's no really accessories, all you get is the adapter anyway. Idk, the idea of used headphones just sounds eeky to me. For $30 I'd get new ones!

Have you used open backs before? If not just know everyone in the room next door will be able to hear what you're listening to, at not too dissimilar volumes. It's like having speakers on your desk

Re. Open box phones from HIFIMAN, I just received a set of Ananda's that I ordered, and they came from a New York address in a matter of days, and were indistinguishable from new - fully wrapped, with box, accessories, etc.. YMMV. Good luck!

Thats what I was thinking, and wondering. I've heard that they are just headphones that had to be opened for customs reasons. And I agree with you CB7FB8KgYh24E that used phones do sound a bit eeky, lol. I have had opens in the past but always preferred closed for in office listening. Now working from home I want to try open and especially planar again.

One thing i've found is that as soon as you touch these felt pads they will be dirty lol. So if they're open box hopefully someone took a high quality lint brush to them!
As a cat owner, it's near impossible to keep the stock pads clear. Lint roller / brush is an absolute must!

I cant believe how hard these cans are to drive. I'm currently running them with a Shanling M8 on Line out Turbo Gain mode into a Romi Audio BX2+ on low gain BAL cable all the way and the volume set to 3/4 on the BX2+ to get a reasonable level from them :scream:.

Is this a HiFiMan trait by any chance that ALL of there HP line up is hard to drive????

I don't really understand the intricacies behind equalizers. Could someone help me out with this one? So I have this AutoEQ equalizer set on my 2020s through EqualizerAPO:
GraphicEQ: 20 -0.2; 21 -0.2; 22 -0.3; 23 -0.5; 24 -0.7; 26 -1.1; 27 -1.2; 29 -1.5; 30 -1.6; 32 -1.9; 34 -2.1; 36 -2.3; 38 -2.5; 40 -2.8; 43 -3.2; 45 -3.4; 48 -3.7; 50 -3.8; 53 -4.1; 56 -4.4; 59 -4.8; 63 -5.3; 66 -5.6; 70 -5.8; 74 -5.9; 78 -6.0; 83 -6.1; 87 -6.2; 92 -6.3; 97 -6.4; 103 -6.5; 109 -6.7; 115 -6.8; 121 -7.1; 128 -7.2; 136 -7.4; 143 -7.6; 151 -7.7; 160 -7.8; 169 -8.0; 178 -8.1; 188 -8.3; 199 -8.5; 210 -8.6; 222 -8.6; 235 -8.6; 248 -8.6; 262 -8.6; 277 -8.5; 292 -8.5; 309 -8.4; 326 -8.4; 345 -8.2; 364 -8.0; 385 -8.0; 406 -8.0; 429 -8.2; 453 -8.1; 479 -7.0; 506 -5.5; 534 -5.7; 565 -6.4; 596 -6.8; 630 -7.3; 665 -7.3; 703 -6.7; 743 -6.7; 784 -7.0; 829 -7.4; 875 -7.7; 924 -7.5; 977 -6.9; 1032 -6.9; 1090 -6.6; 1151 -6.2; 1216 -5.7; 1284 -5.2; 1357 -4.7; 1433 -4.2; 1514 -3.6; 1599 -3.4; 1689 -2.8; 1784 -2.0; 1885 -1.6; 1991 -1.2; 2103 -0.8; 2221 -1.9; 2347 -2.9; 2479 -3.9; 2618 -4.5; 2766 -5.1; 2921 -5.8; 3086 -6.0; 3260 -6.2; 3443 -6.4; 3637 -6.1; 3842 -5.8; 4058 -5.6; 4287 -4.5; 4528 -3.1; 4783 -2.6; 5052 -3.5; 5337 -5.2; 5637 -6.6; 5955 -7.0; 6290 -7.2; 6644 -7.0; 7018 -6.6; 7414 -6.5; 7831 -7.0; 8272 -7.0; 8738 -6.6; 9230 -6.1; 9749 -5.7; 10298 -5.5; 10878 -5.7; 11490 -6.1; 12137 -6.5; 12821 -7.0; 13543 -7.5; 14305 -8.1; 15110 -8.8; 15961 -9.6; 16860 -10.4; 17809 -11.3; 18812 -12.2; 19871 -13.3
Since they seem to lack bass and low-midsout the box and this autoeq doesn't touch the bass, how do I go about adding the appropriate amount of missing bass and low-mids to this EQ?

I did this just now but since I don't know what I'm doing it's probably off or wrong:
GraphicEQ: 20.9 2.1; 21.7 2.8; 22.5 3.6; 23.4 4; 24.9 3.5; 26.3 2.3; 27.6 1.6; 28.9 0.4; 29.9 -0.6; 32 -1.9; 34 -2.1; 36 -2.3; 38 -2.5; 40 -2.8; 43 -3.2; 45 -3.4; 48 -3.7; 50 -3.8; 53 -4.1; 56 -4.4; 59 -4.8; 63 -5.3; 66 -5.6; 70 -5.8; 74 -5.9; 78 -6; 83 -6.1; 87 -6.2; 92 -6.3; 97 -6.4; 103 -6.5; 109 -6.7; 115 -6.8; 121 -7.1; 128 -7.2; 136 -7.4; 143 -7.6; 151 -7.7; 160 -7.8; 169 -8; 178 -8.1; 188 -8.3; 199 -8.5; 210 -8.6; 222 -8.6; 235 -8.6; 248 -8.6; 262 -8.6; 277 -8.5; 292 -8.5; 309 -8.4; 326 -8.4; 345 -8.2; 364 -8; 385 -8; 406 -8; 429 -8.2; 453 -8.1; 479 -7; 506 -5.5; 534 -5.7; 565 -6.4; 596 -6.8; 630 -7.3; 665 -7.3; 703 -6.7; 743 -6.7; 784 -7; 829 -7.4; 875 -7.7; 924 -7.5; 977 -6.9; 1032 -6.9; 1090 -6.6; 1151 -6.2; 1216 -5.7; 1284 -5.2; 1357 -4.7; 1433 -4.2; 1514 -3.6; 1599 -3.4; 1689 -2.8; 1784 -2; 1885 -1.6; 1991 -1.2; 2103 -0.8; 2221 -1.9; 2347 -2.9; 2479 -3.9; 2618 -4.5; 2766 -5.1; 2921 -5.8; 3086 -6; 3260 -6.2; 3443 -6.4; 3637 -6.1; 3842 -5.8; 4058 -5.6; 4287 -4.5; 4528 -3.1; 4783 -2.6; 5052 -3.5; 5337 -5.2; 5637 -6.6; 5955 -7; 6290 -7.2; 6644 -7; 7018 -6.6; 7414 -6.5; 7831 -7; 8272 -7; 8738 -6.6; 9230 -6.1; 9749 -5.7; 10298 -5.5; 10878 -5.7; 11490 -6.1; 12137 -6.5; 12821 -7; 13543 -7.5; 14305 -8.1; 15110 -8.8; 15961 -9.6; 16860 -10.4; 17809 -11.3; 18812 -12.2; 19871 -13.3

Bottom one is the original AutoEQ profile I'm working with. Top one is my attempt to add ~+3db bass.

Any suggestions/additions/improvements to assist with the bass and low-mids would be appreciated.

Hi all:

I'm looking to dip my toes into planars, but I don't have $350 right now for HiFiMan Sundaras. So, I'm looking at their little brothers, the HE400 series.

But there seem to be about four active versions of the HE400 series, and damned if I know the differences besides price. The versions:

HE4xx -- The Drop version. Quality is a worry with all HiFiMan products, but even more so with the Drop version. $180.

HE400i -- The old version, with the suspension headband. $185.

HE400i 2020 -- The 2020 version, with the padded Deva headband. These may not be available anymore in North America, as they're no longer listed on Amazon for US sale, and HiFiMan's website says they only can sell them to the EU. $169.

HE400SE -- This appears to be the latest member of the HE400 family, with a price of $149.

What are the sonic differences between these cans? Are there fit and comfort differences between the suspension headbands of the 4xx and old 400i and the padded, Deva-style 2020 versions of the 400i and new 400SE?

Anyone have any experience with the new 400SE?

Thanks in advance for answers to any or all of these questions.

subscribe to the HE400SE thread, Ithilstone have HE400SE and HE400i 2020 and soon there will be a comparison between the two
