Just got back from another demo session and Im still really heavily leaning towards the Sennheiser 600s,but have read several reviews claiming the HE 500 is a better phone when "properly amped."

I was using the Sony PHA 1 today for both the 600s and HE 500s and although they both sounded good I simply didnt get enough volume out of the HE 500s.

Is that enough amp for the 500s,or am I making a noob error here?!

Thoughts?

Did you turned on high gain?  The HE 500 is only 38 ohms so the PHA-1 should be able to drive it decently.

yes gain was on....600 was almost too loud, but the 500 was just limping in volume wise

That's very odd, as the Sennheiser HD600 is 300 ohms and the HiFiMAN HE500 is only 38 ohms.  Personally I do think the HD600 is a better pick regardless so go for it.
