Hey, I primarily listen to Anime, Eorge, and Idol songs, which set of headphones would be best for listening to these? (examples inside)

I'm trying to pick some cans out, I've been using a 300$ pair of studio monitors to listen to music so far and some cheap headphones. I was thinking of getting two pairs, a open back, then a closed back (as I heard bass is better in closed backs) So far I was thinking of HD598, HD600, or AKG712 for open back, then for closed back HD280, or ATH M50.

I'm actually shopping for headphones for accurate playback, for music mixing (AKG/HD600) but I'd also like to purchase a pair for this specific type of music, that makes it more fun or hypes it up maybe? So I'll likely be buying 3 pairs of headphones (a open back for mixing / analytical music, a closed back for checking low bass frequencys, then a fun pair specifically for the type of music below, here are my favorite types of music, stuff like this:

Fripside: (They're trancy pop music with metalish guitars? I love their sound one of the best for me)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5AHuwHo1SI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HqA9luiHmA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9s6JzSP0MY

then I really love the idol stuff like Lovelive / Idolmaster / Aikatsu

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1p5eNOsl7I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJ8nBwfV_1Y

Kotoko: (just a singer, but some of the old stuff I really liked like these)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l2Utfv4GPE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbiR_ahjqmw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP1dvz0CFTo

then here's some newer anime OPs
KonoSuba OP
https://soundcloud.com/rafif-arts/fantastic-dreamer-konosuba-op-full
Hibike Euphorium OP
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu3p4j_kWsQ

then some more anime ops
Macross Frontier

clannad:

SAO:

Basically also

Date a live OP
Girls Und Panzer OP
NGNL Op
Clannad OP
Haruhi OP

typical girlish cute anime song pop / rok / trancy type of sound

Any reccomendations on headphones for these? btw yes i'm huge weeaboo lol

You don't need three headphones, and shouldn't go about buying multiple pairs at once (in my view) because of how much it takes to get to really know how a pair of cans sounds. Better to develop some frame of reference that you can use to better judge reviews/comparisons/etc to determine if you're getting something you like, than run out and buy everything in sight based on hearsay and conjecture (e.g. I'd completely dismiss your "closed-back has more bass" or "open back is better for analytical" etc).

As far as what should you get, I would look at either the HD 600 or a member of the AKG ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVXYZ7--BBQXXL5000 family (yes I'm being facetious, and primarily riffing on AKG's annual re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-issuing of the K701 that has yielded something like a dozen variants: K701, K702, K702 Anniversary, K712 Pro, Q701 (in three colors), K7XX (for Massdrop), etc). As far as how to decide: the HD 600 are more towards warmer, darker, smoother, and more intimate in their presentation, while the AKGs will be brighter, cooler, leaner, (arguably) faster, and much more spacious. Personally I'd probably lean towards the AKG given what you've described and the genre you're interested in listening to. Either will be fine as a reference headphone (both are/were designed for this purpose).

I would avoid the Sennheiser HD 280, and based on the non-X M50, the M50x as well. The HD 280 are very cold/dry, and aren't what I'd call bassy, and I really disliked the M50 enough to not be interested in any iterations on it, but who knows, maybe the X is a big improvement that fixed all of its issues. :xf_eek:

I have not owned/heard the HD 598 directly, but I've heard probably every other member of their family (and the generation before it), and those all exhibit a very similar house sound - based on that, I'd think the 598 would be a fine choice too, but the AKGs or the HD 600 will be a superior headphone. If you want to save some bucks, I would have no qualms with 598 (it comes in two different colorways too, if thats of any import). I don't have any idea about the closed-back variant - I suspect it sounds considerably different as a closed-back model (usually "closing" an open headphone does not do the sound any favors, which leads me to surmise Sennheiser probably did more than just cover up the vents to create the 598Cs).

You might also consider Audio-Technicas, like the A900X, A2000X, or W1000X.

Hey, I forgot my password. I'm the OP here. Wow a month has gone by already? It seems I have been looking up headphone information for a month now... (not every day of course)

About buying multiple headphones: I'm a producer, who wants to learn to mix/master in headphones. I read about using open back for mixing mid range and high range, then closed back specifically for checking the bass of the song and adjusting it, so that's why I initially wanted multiple phones. I'm planning on using Sonarworks Reference EQ to flatten the headphones (I've talked to them, they said if you send your headphones in for calibration all headphones will sound the same, with very slight differences)
So I basically had the idea of getting a really awesome hyped up headphones for anime music, and then using the reference EQ for a flat sound to mix with when I'm not listening, then getting a closed headphone with a hyped up bass / high. My general idea here is like this:

Open Back Hyped Colored Headphone: Perfectly suited for my genre of music
then
Closed Back Hyped Popular Headphone: Hypes up bass / high in a V shape or something. So I can get an idea what people will be listening to my music on.

Then with those, I was thinking of mixing mid / panning instruments etc on the Open headphones. Then on the Closed back with the hyped up, I would mix the high / low end, so this way, I would never turn the volume of the bass / high frequencys too high, as my headphone would already be hyped like this

Then I would apply the Sonarworks EQ for a flat sound, and test in both headphones, and make slight adjustments if needed and then turn it back to normal mode and test in headphones again.

Do you think this is a good idea? It would be like learning 3 sound signatures... Sorry for the kind of long post.

About your suggestions:

I've recently searched in Japanese about the best "headphone for anisong" etc. The generally headphones that kept popping up were similar to yours, but they (the japanese people) generally seem to think like this for anisong (ATH AD900X, good but harsh highs? ATH AD1000x, I think this is it! I finally found it?, ATH AD2000x, It is perfect!) they also reccomend HD598, but I heard this about it (A bit boring? It is nice, sounds good, but was not the particlur sound signature I was looking for) They also seemed to say they did not like DT8800 and HD600 surprsingly, they said they sound "good, but not amazing" the same with most of the flat/analytical headphones...

I currently have only used AKG240 studio, I love the sound of it actually, I'm wondering if I would even like the hyped up ATH AD2000x etc... Or maybe I like a more flat headphone naturally?

I'm currently about to search for "what headphone is similar to akg 240 but better" I've had it for 3 years but I'm actually kind of bored of it, while I like it, I feel like I should upgrade.

Anyway, right now my current candidates are:
ATH M50x, ATH M30x, SRH950, (for closed back, to check bass)
HD598, ATH1000x (The only different with 2000x, is less bass / a little less mid range), AKG something...

The rep at Sonarworks EQ suggested ATH m50x, and HD600. He said the bass in HD600 is beatuiful after their custom EQ is applied to it here.

Anyway. All this research confused me and I just want to get a pair right now and forget about it lol
