Hey everyone, I am looking for a pair of cans for gaming and music. I have been using a pair of astro a40s for a couple of years now with a mixamp that is a year old. I will be pairing the new cans with the mixamp.
 
My priorities are #1 gaming #2 Metal music #3 electronic music/hip hop
 
I've had my eyes on the Sennheiser HD 598s for the last week. Heard they are great paired with the mixamp. I was also recommended the x1s in the Mad Lust Envy Thread. 
 
I am also planning on buying a Xonar Essence STX sound card that has an amp built it.
 
I would like to keep the headphones in the rough area of $200. I already have the microphone handled.

You seem to have it all figured out. The HD598's and the X1's are the two headphones I generally recommend to gamers. Of course they are fantastic for music as well. For the music you listen to, the X1's are probably better. The HD598's just don't have enough bass for those genres. You obviously don't need an amp, although it can't do any harm. A sound card is a good idea. I would get that before getting an amp for gaming. X1's are slightly over $200, though, so you may have to buy them used. I would try to find best price you can get for the X1's, because they seem to fit your criteria slightly better.
