So, I just got a LCD TV and a blu-ray player. I have audioengine a5 speakers as well as the audioengine s8 subwoofer. Before I just had them hooked in to an IMAC with an EMU 0404 USB. Sound was controlled with the apple remote and everything was lovely.

I want to be able to control the sound with a remote for both the sub and speakers for watching movies, etc on the HDTV.

Ideally, I would like to have my Apple IMAC hooked in to the setup as well.

What do I need to make this happen?

Is it as simple as a preamp that has multiple input/outputs and a remote control?

The cheapest solution would be getting a home cinema receiver that has preamp outs to feed your powered monitors. It works very well. I am using now a Denon AVR3310 to feed my Focal twin 6 monitors and the sound (music or movies) is amazing. If your IMAC has HDMI output, any modern receiver will have an input for it. The denon I have is a network music player, but there are lower models without this that are significantly cheaper (the 2310 and 1910). I am very happy with mine.
