If you need line-in recording capability why not get something that employs current technology? A Cowon A3 (just for instance) recording to FLAC will be better in just about every way than a Minidisc setup.

Why did you say this is you know nothing about the RH1? Which is a lot better than the A3.

Thank you all so far.

Yes I have made up my mind about the minidisc recorders somewhat. I really like the design of the recorder that doomlordis has put up here along with some others that I have seen in "pictures of you portable rig" thread. I am currently getting by on a 1GB nano, so I am not looking for too much capacity.

The only problem is that here in Aus, there are not many recorders that are available that look good too (the RH1 is out of my budget)

I'm confused do you want a recorder or a player? I think you are confused at the difference between recording via line in and transferring via USB.

OK, well I just mentioned the A3 as one example, there are several units capable of recording. With regard to sound quality any current MP3/AAC/FLAC/etc. player should be able to equal or exceed ATRACS, and with regard to solidity a flash-based DAP would be infinitely more shock-resistant than Minidisc, and many hard drive players would probably be just as good....

Please list some examples that sound as good and can record as good as the RH1.

Ooops, I guess I must have been mistaken. Clearly there is no portable recording device in existence that can hope to match the functionality of an RH1. In fact there will probably never be.

Everyone can go back to bed now.

The point : I have 300 + discs , i play them at home on my 980 deck, i can take a disc off the shelf put it in my pocket and listen to it on my portable on the bus to work.
When i get to work , John (who also has a minidisc player) wants to hear the new We are scientists album so i press eject and give him it.
I notice that the Ting Tings have a new record on myspace, i plug in my minidisc and record it.

I think the biggest failing of MP3 players is that they have no removable media, if my player breaks i still have my discs.

I have a Sony S618F mp3 player and use it far less than this:

Simply Beautiful, they do not make players like this anymore.

I disagree. I have a mz-n10 and I used it for a couple of years. Back then I went for a minidisc player because of the removable media but nowadays sd cards are dirt cheap and most new mp3 players come packed with sd card readers. Most of them are UMS. I dont see any advantages of a minidisc whatsoever

And its also outdated for a line in or mic recorder. I believe you cant extract files from your minidisc. Its not universal. So if you want to listen to your recordings on another device then you're only limited to md players. What happens if your md player breaks? How easily can you replace it or repair it. I dont think so either.

One of the best field recorders now is the Edirol R-09. I suggest that one. Someone on this forum also said it functions really well as a mp3 player aswell. Sounds like a cmoy to him

No need to throw the toys out of the pram. Simply want to know whats out there. I have a 1st gen HiMD. But I wouldn't buy a RH1 because I don't find HiMD convenient for use a player, and the RH1 is expensive. If theres a cheaper alternative I'd like to hear about it. The field recorders that are out there at the moment are very expensive, even more than the RH1.

I've heard that mentioned before. Is it expensive?

Ok , Hi-Md has NO DRM , you can record anything from any source and upload it to ANY PC or MAC (if you have 2nd or 3rd gen). It is uploaded as WAV so you can convert it to anything you like.
SD cards are cheap but try writing album names on one????
Edirol is not any better than a RH1 in any way, it is bigger has worse battery life , less than 3 hrs in PCM. They tried to sell it on the 24bit card, doesnt make up for the short comings.
So i have to disagree with you.
