Guys,

Would like to get some recommendations on over the hear headphone in the range of $400. I listen primarily to classical music, mostly cello, violin and acoustic guitar. I'll need headphones that doesn't require an amp, source will be a modified Modwright Sony 5400 which sounded much better than the Schiit Asgard. I'm a fan of electro-stats but I'm not sure if I have the power to drive them.

I appreciate your help and look forward to your suggestions.

Thanks,
Wiggy

HD600 if the Sony is powerful enough. It plays all of your genres (and subgenres) well, even harpsichord.

I would definitely check out the Shure 1540 as well at that price point. They can be had at about $400 and will sound excellent with little power. Hd600/650 are definitely a solid recommendation and are still the best >$500 HPs IMO as long as your sony can power them adequately.

Guys,

Thanks for your advice! I just found a stellar on a combo set of HE300 and EF3 amplifier on HiFiman for $249 so I jumped on it. Hopefully, I didn't make a bad decision but surely I can cancel the order before shipping. Currently using Grado SR80 and some Shure 840, what you think?

Just put my cancellation notice in for the Hifiman combo and will go with the proven cans. What mods or cables would you recommend for the HD600?

Thanks,
